Death of a policeman in Islington 1866
« on: Thursday 10 June 10 14:41 BST (UK) »
Hiyall
 :D
I am reseraching George Witherington on behalf of a friend and need help with a look up in Islington if at all possible?

George Witherington, a police sergeant in the borough of Islington died of stab wounds 18 January 1866.

If anyone has a little time to spare and knows of/has access to  the newspapers in Islington at that time i would appreciate any news articles pertaining to the death of this gentleman.

Many Thanks :-*
Jan

Hi

He doesn't appear (for the Metropolitan police) on the 'Police Roll of Honour and Remembrance In Memory of Police Officers of the United Kingdom who Lost their Lives in the Line of Duty

http://www.policememorial.org.uk/Forces/Metropolitan/Metropolitan_Roll_1829-1899.htm

Was he actually a police officer at the time of his death?

MEPO 21/7/2124  Retirement from Metropolitan Police: George Witherington 1862-1866

You can obtain further details of his record from The National Archives

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/search.asp

The helpguide at the top of the London and Middlesex boards to local studies libraries and archives gives links to all of them. Those local London borough archives  hold copies of local newspapers. The link to Islington local history Centre is given there.

Thanks Valda  ;D

I was under the impression that he was on active duty when he lost his life - but this points otherwise!  One to ponder.  ::)

Many thanks for your help & Advice

I could find nothing about this in the 19th century newspaper database - which is a bit odd.

There was however a report of someone attempting to stab him some years earlier, in March 1857 .

That incident shows up in The Times, Friday, Mar 27, 1857; pg. 9; Issue 22639; col F - referring to the preceding Wednesday.

There's a policeman of the same name who shows up in The Times, Monday, Jan 30, 1933; pg. 12; Issue 46355; col E, having had an illustrious career in the police and the army.  Could be part of the same family?

Does your friend have access to these newspaper archives by use of a library card?  Hertfordshire Library Service does allow access to them that way.
