You can search for free at

http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory/searchHistoricalRecords.htm

Births are searchable up to 1909, Deaths up to 1979, and Marriages up to 1959.  There are instructions on the page, and fees are quoted for Certificates

 ;)
I live in Sydney, Australia, and I'm researching: Powell, Tatham, Dunbar, Dixon, Mackwood, Kinnear, Mitchell, Morgan, Delves, & Anderson

May I butt in on this one please? It seems a waste to start a new thread on the same subject.

I have a registration number (from a cousin) but he isn't coming up in the name search. (NSW)
It's a country city that has had some records lost.

Is there any way to search the NSW BMDs with just a number?

There is no place on the search page to search using a registration number.

Leonie have you tried just using the first two letters of the surname and * and his given name or just the first couple of letters of his given name and* and a year either side of what you think is the registered year.

I try all sorts of searches...some more successful than others :-X :P

Cheers

Leonie.

If you have access to the old NSW BDMs on  CD you can perform a search on a registration number, or part of a registration number etc.

Thanks duinnsleibhe   :D
I think my library has the CDs.
I've also discovered if you use the web page, just enter * in surname, the year, with the name of the city/district in the [District] box, then click on [Search]...it brings up all births registered in that city in that year. You can then click on [Registration numbers] and it sorts them by number.  Thanks to a good friend.  :D
But I still can't find him.  :'(
Unfortunately, I've also learned that a lot of files have been missplaced from this city.
But we are working on it.  :D
I hope this information is helpful to other researchers.

Leonie I thought the places of registration in NSW were for districts not just towns or cities.  Unfortunately I think many regs are missing from all states bdm records not just NSW.  An informative book about the missing SA records was published sometime ago and I have been meaning to locate it.  What era are you seeking the registration?  Have you thought about Parish records?  Did you notice a 'block' of numbers missing when you sorted the records online?

Cheers

Hi Cando,
I've been getting help via PM with a very good friend, who shall remain nameless for a while.
No, I didn't notice a gap  ???
The district is Wagga Wagga and it's 1877. William Henry JONES, to be precise.
I also have a couple of deaths missing from Wagga, but luckily have buriel records for proof. Plus another birth in Wagga, but have army records for him.
William is my Grandfather, so my direct line, the others are great-uncles and cousins, so I'm not as concerned to have their certificates.

Sorry norag, to have taken over your thread,  :-[  but the knowledge might be helpful to others as well.
