What other information do you have (from the death cert?) - age at death, name of wife and children, years in Victoria etc?. There are several James Howarths in the convict list.

Hi,

What family? Can you give more details as they may turn up in the England census.
Are you looking for his parents? Or perhaps a previous wife and children?

You can read the digitised information about James HOWARTH - however there are five James HOWARTH's listed and three arrived in Tasmania before 1836.

http://portal.archives.tas.gov.au/menu.aspx?search=11

There is only one James HOWARTH marriage in Hobart -

HOWARTH JAMES
CADD Mary Ann
18 Jan 1836
At Hobart  Reg#3230/1836

However I am wondering if this James also died in Tasmania.

If this death is your James it would appear he was born c1791.

HOWARTH James
Parents unknown
93 years  at Geelong  1884  Reg#4610

His burial record does not show on the Geelong Cemeteries website.

Do you have information such as where he was born, parents names and when he was transported,  I can't see how you can find anymore about his family in England if he was transported before Sep qtr 1837 [commencement of civil registration] or before Jun 1841 [first census] I think it unlikely you will find any information about a family he may have left in England.

Do you have his wife's or children's names?

Cheers
Cando

Hi.
I think James ahaowarth born 1794 Rosendale, Lancashire, England, died 1884 Geelong, burial at Whoorel Cemetery, Victoria.
Married 1836 Hobat town to Mary Cadd (Ann Cadd).
They had 8 children births dating 1830 to 1847.
Not sure about this one
1st wife Martha born about 1802 England
could have had 6 children.
Not sure again but could be father James Howarth, mother Mary Ingram
Now I am noy sure about any of this information, or how correct it is.

Hi,
There is quite a bit online regarding the family tree of James HOWARTH and Mary Ann CADD. If you cantact the other researchers they may be willing to share the sources of their information with you.

As mentioned by cando, 3 James HOWARTH convicts arrived in Tasmania before 1836. Their Conduct reports make interesting reading.
1821, James HOWARTH (HALWORTH), stated a wife & 1 child at Stockport
1822, James HOWARTH, stated a wife & 2 children at Norland near Halifax. Father & Mother at Native Place of Rosendale Lancaster
1830, James HOWARTH, stated single, mother, Mary, at Native Place of Leeds

Why have other researchers chosen the James from Lancashire? Perhaps they found the Trial records in England and matched them to the reason for Transportation to Tasmania.

You will need to search Parish Registers for baptisms & marriages in England before 1837.

Hi Jessica,
I am related to Mary Anne Howarth born1831 - 1908. She married Fred Castle. It would be nice to get Elizabeth line. Do you have any photos or stories about the Howarth.

Thank you for the information.
James Howarth is the 1822 convict in Tasmania. His 2nd marriage was to Ann Cadd in Hobart. His first wife was Martha Unknown they had 4 to 6 children left in England. They moved to Victoria. How would I go looking up his parents in England - James Howarth and Mary Ingram.
