Dara

M'Cready dated Roberts's Street back to 1756 and questions whether the derivation of the name is from John Robartes, Lord Robartes L.L. 1669-1670.

Hello dabirchall,
My family lived at 9 Robert Street in 1901, but appears to have moved across the road to number 18 by 1911.

Oh ok, It seems to have been a busy place!   I had one set living at No 2 from at least 1840 until at least 1866 (they moved around the corner to Bond Street where they stayed until 1900) and then others in Nos 10 and 12 ending in 1875.

Hi guys,

Sorry to hijack the thread but it's a very close topic and you all seem to have a handle on things! I'm also trying to find a s road in Ushers Quay. This time it's Rutland Avenue listed as an address in the 1901 census.

I've checked out all the links that I think are relevant in the Resources section e.g. Dublin 1904 street index, the old maps on osi.ie, googlemaps and google itself (hence arriving here :) )

There is a Rutland Avenue further south close to Parnell Road but that seems a long way from Ushers Quay. Can anyone shed some light on where I can look next  ???

Thanks in advance.

Hi Jen, could Ushers Quay mean the D.E.D
or district electoral division only.I think the
Rutland ave you found is the correct one.   Anne

I agree. I think Ushers Quay is the just the "ward" or "division" into which it fell,  Ushers Quay was e.g. a division of Dublin for the purposes of the 1901 and 1911 census

I don't suppose anyone would know where I can find a map of the D.E.D.'s and the area they covered in the 1900's ?

There are ward boundaries shown on the 1890s OSI maps - but these did sometimes change so I'm not certain they follow the same boundaries as the 1901/1911 census.  See : Dublin City  (press 8 to see the 1890s map)

I can look up street in a 1904 directory and work out which ward they are included in if that's any use...

To see a list of the streets included in the Usher's Quay Ward in 1901 - see : link
