Burton family from Hanley
« on: Tuesday 08 June 10 18:59 BST (UK) »
I am researching the family of John and Hannah Burton  from Hanley, stoke-on-trent. John and Hannah were both born in Hanley around 1812 and I have no further info on their parents- I have connections with two of their daughters, Mary-Ann b.1836 and Emma/Emily b. 1839. I believe Mary-Anns grandaughter (my g-grandmother),was adopted by Emma/Emily's daughter- any info on this family would be great as I am struggling with my research!

Did John Burton marry for a second time in 1849 to an Amy Brown in Stoke-On-Trent?

I think you can ignore my last message for the 1861 Census shows him still married to Hannah but also in the household is a Hannah whose Surname I can't quite read,it is given as "Weather" in the Index on Ancestry. She is listed as John's Mother-in-law and is given as born in Hanley in c 1783.
RG9/1931/7/8.

Hi there, thanks for your quick reply-the confusion in Emilys name comes from her marriage certificate and later census. On her marriage certificate she is named as Emma (married to Alexander Knowles) in 1861 but in later census she has married a John Bennet and is known in one census as Emma and the other as Emily- confusing!

Hello,
John & Hannah Burton are ancestors of mine too. Hannah's maiden name is Deakin - I have the birth certificate of daughter Hannah to prove this.
Take a look at my website to see what I've managed to find out:
http://hackneytimmis.tribalpages.com (no password needed for info that far back).
