Hi

I'm hoping to find details of three separate voyages by members of the CRAIK family in 1868 and 1869.

James Michie CRAIK died 9 Apr 1869 in Madison, Wisconsin.  He was born 27 Aug 1842 in Aberdeenshire.  A newspaper article published the same day he died states that he had been in Madison 'for the last year' so his voyage to America was probably early 1868.

So the first voyage is (probably) early 1868, James Michie CRAIK (a Stonemason or Surveyor), age 25, bound for Madison, Wisconsin.

The same newspaper article states that James's wife (Anne) and son (John) had been in Madison since 'last fall' (ie fall of 1868).

So the second voyage is (again probably) fall of 1868, Anne Tennant CRAIK, age 27 and John CRAIK, age less than one year, bound for Madison, Wisconsin.

After James's death his wife and son returned to Scotland where Anne gave birth to their second son, James, 24 Oct 1869.

So the third voyage is (again probably!) between April and October 1869 (I guess nearer April than October in view of Anne's pregnancy), Anne Tennant CRAIK, age 28 and John CRAIK, age 1, bound for Turriff, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

I have tried CastleGarden without success.  Please can anyone help with any of these voyages?

Jonathan

Arrival Date: 23 Jun 1868

Unfortunately, there are no UK Incoming Passenger Lists before 1878 that I am aware of

Yes unfortunately there are no surviving records for incoming passenger lists before 1878. And it is also unfortunate that passenger lists leaving America weren't kept until about 1908.

Thanks.  It might be them, but there are a few discrepancies (James's age, the fact that I think Anne and James travelled arrived in Madison at different times).  I'll carry on looking, CRAIK is quite an unusual surname so should be able to find them.

Hi JonathanC

I am very distantly related to James Craik. If you would like I can send you the family history dating back to around 1780.

Regards

That would be interesting.  I can trace back from James as follows:

James CRAIK (1869-1930)
James Michie CRAIK (1842-1869) - married Anne Tennant GEORGE (1841-1921)
Cowie CRAIK (1814-1873) - married Mary MICHE (1818-1867)
William CRAIK (born c1767) - married Margaret ROBERTSON (1780-1861)
Alexander CRAIK (born c1737) - married Helen Wood (born c1737)

One of my cousins is direct from John George CRAIK (1868-1951).
