What Regiment did George belong?
« on: Tuesday 08 June 10 17:05 BST (UK) »
The photograph attached (hopefully) is of my husband's paternal grandfather, William Wootton Price who served in the Royal Horse Artillery (Notts. Battery) Australian Mounted Division, and paternal great grandfather, George Price.   They met up in Alexandria, Egypt in February, 1916 when this photograph was taken.

Is it possible please to say in which Regiment George (on the right of the picture) was serving.   Sorry but this is the best photo we have as it is a copy of a copy.   We are told that on the back of the original photograph is written "To Dear Peggy from Will and Mr. Price - 17th February, 1916 Alexandria".

We have been told that William Price was the unofficial photographer to the Notts RHA and we have a really lovely big thick album of the photographs he took whilst serving in and around Egypt.
Any help or suggestions as to George's Regiment would be appreciated and most helpful.

Katy.

Looks like Army Service Corps

But could be one or two others...
One more charge and then be dumb,
When the forts of Folly fall,
May the victors when they come
Find my body near the wall.

Thank you so much for replying to my post, we did wonder if it might be the Army Service Corps but didn't really know.

I would like to take this opportunity of congratulating you on your recent appointment as Moderator of the Armed Forces Board.   Although I haven't been a member very long I have, for the past year (or two), been following Rootschat, didn't join before as I thought I would never learn how to do posts etc.   A well deserved appointment good luck.

Katy.

Katy88--I'm not sure whether you're still reading this thread. I do have some information about William Wootton Price and George Price -- George married my great-grandfather's sister Annie Wootton and I have some family letters discussion the WWI service of WWP and GP. This is the first time I've tried to use this forum, so I hope that we can make contact.

Hi KMcC,  Received email from Rootschat, I haven't been doing research for some time but it was good to receive your post.   WWP was my husband's grandfather and GP his great grandfather.   George and Annie Wootton were married on 1st September 1894 at St. Saviours Church in the Meadows area of Nottingham.  But you probably know this.  I have a small photograph of William and Betsy Wootton with three of their children  - Samuel, William and Annie not on the photo is Lizzie.   It is George Price we are interested in as we do not seem to be able to trace his birth certificate.   His mother was Frances Hawley and she marriied Robert Price in 1873 and had another son - Robert.    We believe George was illegitimate as we were always told his birth date was 27th April, 1871.   If you feel we can be of any further help, would be pleased to hear from you.

Kind regards.    Katy88.

Hi, Katy88,

The information I have on WWP and GP's military service comes from family letters from Annie Wootton Price to Tom--comments on where they were serving and an address for WWP. In terms of GP's birth, in 2007 I was in correspondence with Sylvia & Graham Lilley and they gave me the 27 April birth date with the same opinion that he was born out of wedlock. For what it's worth, it seems clear from family letters that George had a drinking problem and lost several jobs as a result--but seems to have come through the War well.  I have the same photo--a number of family photos came out of my great-aunt's house.

Hi again KMcC,   I think, from your reply, we have been in touch previously, probably through one of the Family History Societies.   Does that ring a bell with you?   You may still have my email address as we were in touch some years ago.

Regards,   Katy88.

You may be right although I don't have a saved e-mail from a Katy88 in my file. However, it looks as though you and I have the same info. Thanks for the discussion.
