British Army - Sandy, Berks
« on: Tuesday 08 June 10 16:48 BST (UK) »
Hi All, I recently found on my grandfathers wedding cert from 1942 that he was a Soldier and his address was listed as Sandy, Berkshire UK. Don't have any other other information and was wondering if anybody could tell me which regiments were stationed in this area and how one could go about finding the regiment he was attached to and or any other relevant information. thanks in advance - ken

You have not included his name, birthyear or birthplace

Are you sure he was actually stationed in Berkshire

My apologies, newbie here and still not quiet used to posting queries.

His name was James Patrick Long born Cork City, Ireland 1926, i'm afraid that's all the info I have regarding his career in the British Army.  I'm not sure of age requirements for enlistment but he was only 16 when he married so it is possible he told mistruths about his age when he enlisted

Hi
The Pioneer Corps had a James Patrick Long who enlisted in Belfast (as did most personnel who originated from Eire) however we have a date of birth recorded as 14 Mar 21 (you state born 1926 which would mean that he could not enlist until 1944 - 18th birthday). We also had Pioneers stationed at Sandy (there was an ammunition depot there). His service number was 13111576. However we then have him recorded as a deserter on 30 Jun 43!

Just to point out that while the certificate may read "Berkshire" it was probably a confusion with Bedfordshire, the county in which Sandy is situated.

Hi Norman, that would be my grandfather alright. He was born on the 14/3/26. Thanks for the service number although i'm not sure the records  will have much info considering he didn't stick around too long :-) - ken
