][/color]e death of my paternal grandfather in 1911 my grandmother Florence nee NORRIS could not afford to keep her three sons.

MY  father Albert BRIGGS born 1908 was sent to live with a relative in Ireland, the baby Frederick stayed with his mother and I am not sure what happened to the eldest boy Robert Leonard (k/a) William.

I have a photograph  of a soldier which my father said was his brother. It is taken about 1936 and he is wearing a Royal Army Medical Corps badge. My father knew very little except to say that he had emigrated to Australia.

If anyone knew this man or any of his family please get in touch.   Thank you

Do you know where/when Robert Leonard would have been born?

You might be able to find him heading to Australia here:

The 3 children are with their mother after the death of their father in 1911. Florence has given their names as William age 5, Albert 2 and Frederick Percy 3(?) months.
I was just wondering where the names Robert Leonard came from for William?
The birth places for all three children (Port Hill and May Bank) fall within the Wolstanton registration area.

Florence had been married for 9 years in 1911 and and her status was married not  a widow.  Three of her five were children living.  I wonder if Robert Leonard was one of the deceased chn?  Did your grandfather die after the 1911 Census or perhaps he was not with your grandmother on the night of the census.

Births Jun 1906
BRIGGS William     Wolstanton 6b/82

Births Mar 1908
BRIGGS  Albert Edward  Wolstanton 6b/174

Births Dec 1910
BRIGGS Frederick P  Wolstanton 6b/66

It is difficult to help you find Robert Leonard aka William in our records unless we have a definite ID.  When was Robert Leonard born?  Was Florence married previously?  I can't seem to find a BRIGGS/NORRIS Florence marriage.

If you can give us a little more information we may be able to search the Aussie records.

Have you located Robert Leonard/William  in the English War Service records?

I can't see an outgoing passenger record to Australia for a Robert, Leonard or William BRIGGS to 1960.  There are many BRIGGS records with no initial to identify other than male or female.

Cheers
Cando

In free BDM there is a  sept qtr 1904 death registered in Wolstanton Staffordshire for Robert Briggs age 0.

Also in Staffordshire in Spt qtr 1904 a birth for a Robert Briggs but in Stoke upon Trent.

1904 also matches the approximate year of her marriage and t in sept qtr 1903  in Stoke upon Trent   Florence BRIDGEWOOD and William HEnry Briggs appear in the same page of the register.

Regards

Robyn

Hi hannelore :)

If William/Robert was in the Australian forces during WW2, his papers are probably at the National Archives of Australia.  You can search for him here:

http://naa12.naa.gov.au/NameSearch/Interface/NameSearchForm.aspx

Put in his surname, and for category of records choose "WWII".

[/quot  So sorry for my confusion.

William Briggs was born in Wolstanton 1906.  I understand my grandmother Florence had a couple of stillborn children so that could be the answer to all the Briggs'.

I also cannot find any marriage for Florence and Frederick Briggs and do not know the answer.

.My mother said the attached photo was My father Alberts' brother and I now know for sure it is not his younger brother Frederick Percy.
Kew have informed me that the cap badge worn is that of the Royal Medical corps and there is a date in pencil on the back 1930 or 36  not sure as it is very faint

My grandfather died in September 1911 but was in hospital at the time of the 1911 census and died in September

I wonder if it was New Zealand he went to?  It must have been after 1930/36 as he was in the British Army then

Thank you all very very much for your kindness and also to all those who have shown an interest
