ROBERTS
« on: Monday 28 March 05 15:42 BST (UK) »
Hi

Can anybody help?
I am looking for any info regarding my great grandfather and his family.  His name was HENRY GEORGE ROBERTS and he was born in Werham, Dorset circa 1890.  I think his father was called Walter and his mother Mary.  I believe he was a farmer then later he became a painter and decorator and also owned a guest house with his wife, Maria in Swanage.  He also served in the Navy during WW1 and sailed to Russia.

I am totally stuck as there are now very few living relatives and i am not having any luck with the census'.  All help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Michelle :)

Hi Michelle,

Welcome to RootsChat !

Apologies if you know it already, but if you are searching in Dorset then you need to know this site:
The Dorset Online Parish Clerks (OPC): http://www.dorset-opc.com
It has a HUGE database and a good search engine.

I couldn't find a Werham in Dorset but there is a Wareham.
Was Werham a typo for Wareham ??

I enterd "roberts walter wareham"  in the search engine with "Find ALL words" and got "125 documents"

Sorry, but I didn't have time to look through them all, so have a look and see if you recognise anybody.

Good luck,
Bob

Michelle,

Hi, I have details of Henry G Roberts 9 years old in the 1891 census.  It says that he was born in Kinson, a suburb of Bournemouth.  This could be your man, other members in the household are as follows:-
Name    age    position    occupation      birthplace
H W       39      head        farm sevant    Winfrith
Lily E      11      dau.         scholar           Canford
Sarah     36     wife                                 Corfe Castle
Sidney F   7     son           scholar            Longham

Winfrith and Corfe Castle are extremely close to Wareham.  Hope this might help.  Sarah Roberts (Researching Roberts, Thorne, Hibbs, Old, Hann and Stainer in Dorset.  Powell in Gloucestershire, Coster in Hampshire, Warden in Kent and Gartley/Gartly in London and Scotland)

Hi

Thanks for reply.  I dont think he is my man as since posting this original message i have managed to get my Henry George's birth and marriage certificates and i now know his parents were Walter George Roberts and Mary Martha Gillingham.

Thank you so much for your time

I also have family with the last name Roberts - I don't know if we could be related.  My information is:

John Roberts and Elizabeth Rowland.  I have found information about their marriage, Parish of Hinton St Mary  MARRIAGES 1732 to 1847.  Transcribed  from the Bishops Transcripts and randomly checked against Parish Registers  to 1805, by Lynda Mudle-Small,
December 2002. The parish registers record marriages from 1581.
1808 John ROBERTS bachelor & Elizabeth ROWLAND spinster both of this parish were married 6-Dec by banns (BT)

I am hoping to receive a copy of their marriage certificate soon.  John was born in about 1788, Elizabeth was born about the same time and died Oct 11, 1840 in Hinton St. Mary, Dorset, England.  Their children include:  Luke, Matthew, John, Mark Rowland, Ester and Louisa Jane.  The brothers immigrated to Newfoundland, Canada in approximately 1849 where Mark and John settled in Bonne Bay, Newfoundland.

Have you found any information showing that John could be a relation to your people?

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Hi Joanne

Sorry but i dont have any mention of any of those names in my tree so i  guess they are probably another Roberts family.  I will keep a note of your message though and if i find a link i will contact you.

Cheers
