Newspaper archives- Liverpool Courier
« on: Monday 07 June 10 17:43 BST (UK) »
I am wondering if there is an easy way to search the Liverpool Courier archives.

I want to look up a birth announcement 1860-1862. I am trying on the ancestry site but it seems to be very hit and miss and VERY long winded. Is there any other site that ha sthe records online?

Hi Sellio

This is an interesting website

You may not find what you are looking for, but it's an interesting read.

Kind Regards

Thanks Jennie,
You were right, it is interesting reading although my G. Grandmother wasn't there.
Thankyou

Hi,

They weren`t big on putting names on Birth Announcements  in those days.

e.g.
August 14th (1860) at 1 Pownell Square Mrs William Jones of a daughter. (this William Jones was a Victualler)

Do you have an address for the family from the 1861 census?

No, I'm afraid I don't.

I only know the name from Elizabeth Ann Jones' marriage (married William wainwright, 1889) and death certificates. I know she was born on 17th March 1860-62 (different dates on each cert!). I know her father was William, a builder. Then I know nothing. I am trying to track the mother but it seems an impossible task.

Have you found her on censuses after she married? What is her birthplace?

How do you know her day and month of birth if you are unsure of the year?

Yes, I found her on the census and she was born in Liverpool. Marriage cert gives 1862, death cert gives 1860.

Last year I was lucky enough to meet my late mum's cousin and she , as a child, lived with her grandma (Elizabeth Ann) and grandad for a while and always lived close until Elizabeth Ann died in 1934. Sadly my newly discovered relative passed away in December but I did get as much information as she could remember. I was told Elizabeth Ann's family disapproved of the marriage to William Wainwright and after 1889 no contact was made apart from one sister (no name, I'm afraid) who went to live in Ireland.

Hi Sellio,

I never answered your question about newspapers.  I can`t tell whereabouts you are living, but  try accessing your county library online and see if they offer free access to the Gale 19c Newspapers.  If they do you can access these using your library card number.

Regarding your Elizabeth Ann - I am fairly sure that the William and Elizabeth Jones that CaroleW found in a previous topic could well be yours.  I suspect she may have been knocking a couple of years off her age as she was married to a younger man.  A womans prerogative! William Jones was a Builder Employer by 1901 living with his son in law Andrew Bancroft and daughter Mary in Birkenhead.

Previous topic for Elizabeth Ann:

Thanks Mo.

I got that one and that is the one I am trying to investigate. I started sending for birth certs but after the first three I stopped as the cost was starting to mount up. I tried to use the cros referencing service but it didn't work out and I received yet another wrong one.

AS you know, Mo, I have been trying to unpick this one for a while.

I need to find Elizabeth Ann's mother's maiden name so I can send for the birth certificate. Luckily, my Aunt Margie, whom I was lucky enough to meet last year just before she passed away, told me the exact birthday so if I can get a birth cert with 17th March I should be fairly sure that I have the right one. This is the problem with popular names..... . The paternal line of this family were also from the same area with the amazingly unusual name of Jackson!! .... it has not been easy but it has been really interesting and I have found out all sorts about my family (it's a wonder I don't have webbed fingers!)

I live on the East Yorkshire Coast.

Cheers!

Sheila
