Jersey, Channel Islands - Le Duc
« on: Monday 07 June 10 15:45 BST (UK) »
Hi there!
Can anyone help me?
I have an Eliza Le Duc who was supposedly born in Jersey, Channel Islands in 1840. Her father's name appears to be Joseph.
She married Charles Greenwood in Staffordshire, England in 1874.
I have no more earlier information on her.
They had 2 children, Harriet Grace and Frances Mary before immigrating to Western Australia.

Thanks!

THere are no Channal Island records on line  but the record offices on Guernsey and Jersey do look ups at a price. There are quite a few websites though which may help such as the mailing lists. Have a look at whats on offer on Google.Ringrose

Hi

I think I have the information that you require.  Le Duc is not a common Jersey name and I have found a baptism for an Elizabeth Le Duc with a father of Joseph or Josue but not at the exact date you suggested.

Elizabeth Le Duc was baptised 16th Sept 1835 to Joseph Daniel Le Duc and Betsy Jeune at St Helier Parish Church. If this is correct they had a number of other children:

Ann Le Duc 8th Jan 1837
Matthieu Le Duc 16th Sept 1838
Mary Esther Le Duc 31st May 1840
Jane Mary Le Duc 31st Jul 1842

Thses other children were also baptised in St helier Church and may help you confirm I have the correct family.

Stewart

Thanks everyone!
I'm not sure if this is the family, but it may explain a few things.
Eliza Le Duc moved to Lichfield, Staffordshire and and married a Gentleman's son in 1874, Charles Greenwood.
The story goes that he was disinherited from the family and moved to Australia as he married beneath him. Eliza was a servant. The Greenwoods had a majestic Manor in Lichfield.
If her 'brother' was in prison, this may have added to the problem.

Let me delve a little further!

To add to your collection: I also have another branch of the Le Ducs, living in St Peter Port, Guernsey, Channel Islands. They seem to have arrived in the Islands from Normandy in about 1842, are listed in the 1851 census, but most of the family has disappeared again by 1861 (Dead? Emigrated? Or just returned to France?)

Richard Olivier Le Duc, sailor b 1816 abt in France. Married Augustine Le Ganiy (or Le Gury or Le Ganee)
children:
Mary Adelina Olivia Le Duke (b 1843, St Peter Port)
Augusta Le Duc (St Peter Port, 1848-1931) married William James Austin
Adolphine Le Duc (b 1850, St Peter Port; in the workhouse hospital in 1881- a destitute prostitute, with 2 young children. Presumed to have died there)
Richard Olivier Le Duc (b 1853, St Peter Port).
Bowermans of Honiton, Devon; Browns of South Shields, Durham; Clares and Townsins of Northamptonshire; Coopers of Halstead, Essex; Leathleys of Morley; Smiths of Alne, North Yorks.
