COACHPAINTER

Hi

My great great grandfather and his brother in law were identified as coachpainter's on the 1901 census.  Silly question but what exactly did they do, did they paint coaches, buses, trains, carriages etc and was this decorative and artistic painting or not so fancy??

Hi Michelle
I believe you will find it is as stated , a coachpainter painted coaches [horse drawn mail coaches and of course horse drawn buses in 1901].They will now be spraying buses and trucks .Mail coaches would have been in the Livery of the various companies.

Coach painting also encompasses the craftsmen who "lined out" cars and vans. They painted on the fine gold lines that outlined the contours of the vehicle or coach.

I have since found out that my great grandfather could paint a coat of arms freehand on a carriage.  My grandad has always been artistic as is my mother, must be a familt trait.  Nice change of profession too as most of my family were miners, slaughterers, iron mongers etc.  Bet he had nice hands!

HI Michelle,

                 You will find even today that a coachpainter paints buses by hand using paint instead of spraying separating diffrent coulours or design by masking tape  so not much has changed in over 100 years coat of arms and company emblems have stencils masked to the bus unlike i suspect in you g.g.grandfathers days.
