Where exactly is Cooraven/Cooreven in Uskane

My g-g-grandmother was a Piper from the parish of Uskane

Now the Tithe Aplotment of 1833 for Uskane has been transcribed and is here. I am interested in checking the Pipers on that transcription who are living in townland of "Cooraven"

Griffiths gives only one Piper by 1852, John Piper, living at Sopwell in Uskane.

Sean Rudd gives the Spelling as "Cooreven"

The  askaboutireland site has good contemporary maps of high definition of the area (I cannot put on a link as the session cookie does not last). But I cannot find exactly where the townland is (it certainly is NOT the place on Lough Derg that comes up on modern Google maps)

So can anyone pinpoint Cooreven or Cooraven in parish of Uskane.

The Irish placenames commission - website www.logainm.ie shows Cooreven in Uskane parish PLU Borrisokane. It gives map references R93 6 95 8
but I use the Discovery series maps and don't have No 53 which covers that area. If you can get to see that map Cooreven should be marked on it.

see the location on the 1st Ed OSI Map Coorevin  (click on the historic or historic bw options to see the 1st ed maps) The green boundaries are the civil parishes, red ones for townlands.

yet another spelling variation for you!

These all seem to the anglicized versions of the Irish name for the townland : Comhar Éimhín

nothing all that wise involved... just poking around seanruad, the Irish Times, Google maps and the OSI maps. Maps and diagrams just seem to work for me!

A you've already seen it's not on modern google maps but this route bounds the area Uskane to Liskinlawn to Firpark to Feigh  The townland is roughly between Uskane and Firpark

I agree. It it invariably necessary to see where everywhere is on a map, then one can see if you can draw any conclusions

In this case it is spin off from 1901 census. I noticed that my g-g-grandmother put that she was born in Kings County. And I am flaffing about now to see where it might have been, given that the man she married came from a few miles west of Shinrone, and the Offaly/ Tipperary border is somewhat winding around there.

Ironic thing with her is we have an exact date of her birth, but not the place, from family records

I assume you found Coorevan on the map, it is the townsland about half a mile from my family home which is in Uskane.

Kings County is the old English name for County Offaly.
