Many thanks to all who replied regarding the Navigation Hotel/Inn on Canal Street.  A Gt Granduncle James Crosby had been landlord there c1871 census.  Thomas Jones a later landlord was also a well heeled gentleman who I believe owned the Brewery and used the Navigation as a 'bottle store'  As regards Thomas Jones there is much more to know - his back ground, family etc.,  Your help has been greatly appretiated.  Ray.

I have just stumbled on this conversation and don't know how old it is but my great, great, great grandfather William Brereton is cited in the 1841 census as living in the Navigation Inn and was described as a brewer. Cheers, Rosie

The post were in June 2010
If you go to the 1876 map at  https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/351901/382970/13/100102 you can see the "Navigation Brewery" marked behind the "Navigation Inn". You will have to change the zoom level if you don't have a subscription.
