Hello Moya

It would seem I owe you an apology, rather than vice-versa, since I've just noticed another of your posts to the L&SWL forum viz http://url.ie/6w71

As the marriage certificate for your fisherman John DANIELS clearly identifies his father as William DANIELS, pilot, there's no doubt whatsoever that you do indeed have a connection to this Liverpool Pilot family. My apologies for suggesting otherwise.
Good to see that the MMM have provided all the information you need for free -that's certainly most obliging of them.

Incidentally, I note that in the 1851 Census John & Hannah DANIELS + children William & Jane were living at 22 Worfield Street, Liverpool.
Living at 8 Worfield Street in the same Census was my wife's direct ancestor John MARTINDALE, fisherman, and his family.
Being in the same line of business, and living in the same road, no doubt the two would have been well acquainted with each other?

Best regards
Gordon

Hello Dave,
are you still doing the look ups? I have just discovered an ancestor, John Ball marrying Ellen Fuller at St Peter's Priory in 1817 at which he gives his occupation Pilot. Any trace of him in the list of pilots?

John

There are about 50 pilots buried or remembered at Toxteth Park Cemetery, Liverpool.  There is a very useful website which can be searched:
www.info@toxtethparkcemeteryinscriptions. co.uk

Select the search option and type 'pilot' into the last box.  About ten entries per page should appear.  You may be lucky!

Thanks Ainslie,

I have just given that a try and no luck.  Next time I am in Liverpool I'll see if there is a copy of the list at the Central Library.

Thanks again

John

Per Barry Youde's "Beyond the Bar", John Ball was licensed as a pilot in 1817 and died in 1837.

Thanks for the useful tip, Ainslie - found one of mine in Toxteth Park (David EVANS d1913) plus the wife of another (Margaret Elizabeth EVANS d1865).
Margaret Elizabeth's husband William EVANS (b1809 New Brighton) was lost at sea in the wreck of the Norwegian brig SIBAL off Point Lynas on 9 December 1874 so has no grave. His elder brother George EVANS (b1804 Meols) was drowned in the River Mersey on 3 January 1849 and buried in St James' Cemetery in Liverpool, which if I'm not mistaken was the traditional resting place of pilots lost in the course of duty when a body was recovered.

Hello All
Slight movement of topic.  Does anyone know if there is a similar list of pilots for Southampton?

Thanks

Shaun
thank you for that information it helped me go back a further generation to his father Joseph Ball. According to his marriage in 1785 to Mary Owens he was also a pilot. Does he also appear in the Barrie Youde's book? By the way the only place selling the book seems to be Amazon for £25 second hand one copy only
