Liverpool Pilots

Has anyone researched this topic.  Am looking for a William Daniels, Liverpool pilot in 1838.  The Maritime museum at Albert Dock has registers but unfortunately they do not do research.  Any help greatly appreciated.  Moya

moya, welcome to rootschat :)

If you get no lookup offers from  this post, maybe a rewording of the topic sentence might helpby being more specific... eg,
Lookup at Maritime Museum, Albert Dock, Liverpool please.

Worth a try :)

Has anyone researched this topic.  Am looking for a William Daniels, Liverpool pilot in 1838.

I can tell you that five Liverpool Pilots named DANIELS are listed in Barrie Youdes' book 'Beyond the Bar' viz :-

DANIELS C - born 1836, licenced 1857, retired 1895, died 1896

DANIELS J(i) - licenced 1819, died in service 1853

DANIELS J(ii) - born 1818, licenced 1839, retired 1870, died 1883

DANIELS T - licenced 1839, died 1841

DANIELS W - licenced 1817, retired 1856, died 1857

You may perhaps find this thread of some use :-

Hi
In the 'Returns Relating to Pilots and Pilotage' for 1854, William Daniels, aged 58 is attached to No 1 Pilot Sloop "Liverpool" which was built in 1834. He is a licenced journeyman Pilot restricted to vessels drawing not more than 14 1/2 feet of water. It was unusual, although not uncommon, for a senior Pilot in age to be restricted in some way, as to the size of vessel to be piloted. No doubt his pilot record in the Pilot's Character Book will throw some light on the subject. This can be viewed at the Merseyside Maritime Museum, Albert Dock, Liverpool.

Hi Dave

She apparently didn't feel any necessity to post an update on this thread, but it would seem that Moya subsequently discovered she doesn't have a connection to Liverpool Pilot William DANIELS after all - see http://url.ie/6vn4

Best regards
Gordon

Hello Gordon & Dave.  My humble apologies for not replying to your posts, got somewhat bogged down with family matters.  However I am pleased to say that I received some very helpful information from the Maritime Museum which I was not expecting as they had told me they did not do research.  I was emailed copies from William Daniels character book (seemed to have been somewhat of a larrikin) and also a list of some of his children by his two wives.  William did have a brother John who may have been the pilot John Daniels b. 1818 but I cannot prove this.  Many thanks for all your help.  Moya

Hi Moya,

Very interested, and pleased, to hear that the MMM emailed you a copy of his PCBk entry.
This will assist a lot of researchers in their quest for more information about their Pilot ancestors.

Didn't want to say too much in my first reply, but draft restriction usually meant some offence had been committed and that an appearance before the Pilotage Committe could result in a penalty for perhaps a year or two. Anyway now you know why!

Glad you now have the info you were looking for

Regards
Dave
