Looking for John Hodgkinson b. 17 Sept 1821 "Wolwich"
« on: Wednesday 02 June 10 23:05 BST (UK) »
I am looking for information on the family of my 4th great grandfather.  According to notes just found in an old family Bible, the Rev John Hodgkinson was born on 17 Sept 1821, in "Wolrich, near London, England."

He married Elizabeth Hay, b. 5 Mar 1823 in "Frickley, near London, England."   They were married on 30 Nov 1845.

He received, on 13 May 1848, a "Transfer of Church Membership" from Primitive Methodist Conference #66, North Nottingham circuit, to Primitive Methodist Protestant conference in the United States.

I believe John and Elizabeth immigrated to Pennsylvania.

Any information or help is greatly appreciated!!

Thank you,
Gretchen

Hi Karenlee,

Yes, that is family.   Elizabeth died 27 Feb 1880, so that's why her "occuption" is "died."   ;D  I appreciate your time in checking on this!

I should have specified, I'm looking for info on John Hodgkinson while over in England  (hopefully, finding out who his parents and his siblings were).   I have lots of info once he immigrated to the US.  :)

Part of what I'm curious about, was "Wolrich" a township back in the early 1800's?   As I look at the maps now, it looks like it's part of central London.

Karenlee,

It could be!   The information comes from a typed letter, found in an old family Bible.  It was written in 1976, by my great Aunt who was 80 at the time of the writing.  She did type "Wolwich" several times.  I didn't know if she was unclear on the data (she was a very sharp lady) or if this might have been an older name?

We just came across this letter last night, so this is very exciting to me, and now I'm trying to track back further.   :)

Free BMD has the marriage of John HODGKINSON and Elizabeth KAY ( probably mistranscribed and should be HAY )  as Dec Qtr 1845 15 1183 Radford Nottinghamshire.

As you have both the date and the reference numbers it would be a good idea to order this certificate as it will give you the father's names for both bride and groom.

There is a marriage recorded in the December qtr of 1845 at Radford, Folio 15 Page 1183, where two of the parties are a John HODGKINSON and an Elizabeth KAY. Looking at the index image they are typed, so if a mistranscription has occurred it is from the register to the index, wher an upper case H could be mistaken for a K.

Radford is in Nottinghamshire, which would tie in with what you mentioned earlier about the North Nottingham Circuit.

Getting the marriage certificate will name their fathers as well as give an occupation, which will allow you to get back another generation.

They can be ordered online from http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

There is a John HODGKINSON in the 1841 census in Radford, Nottinghamshire, which could be him. His age is given as 15, but he could have been 15-19 as ages of those over 15 in that census were rounded down to the nearest 5. He was not born in the county, but I cannot make out his occupation.

Just wondering if you now have some marriage details which might help in progressing with the origins of John HODGKINSON ???
