Scaleby Look-Up
« on: Wednesday 02 June 10 01:36 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Can anybody do a look-up on the Scaleby parish records for Martha Elizabeth Emmerson b 02 Aug 1857. IGI only gives her mothers name as Matilda. I'm hoping the actual record will give her mothers age or at least confirm she is unmarried.

Can't find any birth records for a Matilda Emmerson at all although there appears to be one born in Brayton (about 1839) on the 1861.

Any help appreciated.

Dave

Hi Dave,Sorry I don't have access to the Scaleby parish records, but have found Martha E Emmerson b Coathill Wetheral 1857  as a general domestic servant  for Sarah Wilkinson(60)at 30 Cumwhitton village in 1871.
Matilda b 1839 is a house servant for the Nixon family at 76 Drumburgh village in 1861(no sign of Martha although I looked for her separately)Sorry I can't be of more help at the moment.
Good luck Julie

Thanks Julie,

This is a bit of a weird family. Martha Elizabeth was born Emmerson but is living with her Grandmother in the 1861 census as Martha Ferguson in Scaleby. She later has my great grandfather William Emmerson (who is born and registered as William Ferguson) in 1878 as an unmarried mother. She later marries George Jackson as Martha Emmerson and in the 1891 is living in Crosby on Eden with her son William Ferguson - All very confusing! I couldn't find anything on Matilda so will take another look at the 1861.

Many thanks for the help

Dave

Hi Dave,
Maybe you have this?
From FreeBMD, Marriage;
John FERGUSON

Martha is born c 1813, All Hallows on 1861 Census
This may be her in 1841 before Marriage to John;
HO107/167/10/Brampton

1851 Census John and Martha are under Forguson. No Matilda with them though.
HO107/2428/389/12
Martha is still alive in 1901.

Christening, Extacted IGI;
Martha EMERSON, 18 April 1813, All Hallows, Cumberland
Parents, WILLIAM and MARY
Siblings;
JANE, 18 April 1813
MARY, 14 May 1815
ANN, 25 October 1818
JOHN, 27 February 1822
The Batch only starts 1813 so there may be more children born before this.

Submitted Marriage;
William EMERSON
Mary HANNAH, 13 November 1809, All Hallows, Cumberland

Very left of centre chance for Matilda in 1851?

Hi Trish,

I did have all the previous information. However, the Marelda looks like a good bet to me. Especially if Soalby could be interpreted as Scaleby

Martha had a son in 1843 prior to marrying John Ferguson - William Emmerson b in Brampton. However, I can't find her having any other children prior to marriage and she is living with her brother John in 1841.

Still as confused as ever!!

Thanks

Dave

Hi Trish,

Just to add I may have found her in the 1871 as Mary Emmerson living with a Jane Emmerson from Baggrow ( Baggraw). Martha had a twin sister Jane B. 1813 they were born in Allhallows which I believe is not too far away. But the interesting thing is there is a Jane Ferguson living there also who is a niece from Scalby.

The more I look at this the more confused I get!!!
