North Shields non-conformists
« on: Tuesday 01 June 10 14:15 BST (UK) »
wonder if anyone can help look up a family for me in North Shields..

I've found a marriage at Christ Church for Peter Christie and Mary Frost in 1808 but no baptisms for their children and I'm beginning to suspect that they were baptised at one of the non-conformist churches in the town.. I am particularly interested in an Isabella Christie baptised between 1813 and 1818 to the above parents though any children with the above parents gratefully received as I have had no luck so far in tracing any baptisms.
Any pointers or help would be much appreciated as I have hit a bit of an online brickwall and can't get back to North East till much later this year.
thanks ETHYL X

As you probably know from 1754 until 1st July 1837 only Church of England, Jewish, and Quaker marriages were valid, so even if they were non-conformist they would have to be married in the Parish Church.

thanks for pointing that out.. I did once know that but it had gone in one ear and out the other..  ::) Does that apply to baptisms or were they valid in a non-conformist church only?
thanks for swift reply.

Baptisms could be carried out anywhere. Marriages were covered by the 1753 Clandestine Marriages Act (Harwicke's Act)

Baptism is a sacrament of the Christian Church, and, as far as I know, all Christian Denominations practice it, apart from the Quakers.

Hello ETHYL ,
I have had a look around yes I can see the marriage in 1808 but the only children to Peter  (a mariner ) are Eleanor and Hannah 4Th September 1814 two complete separate entries image 53 of 669,for Tynemouth both Christ church but the mothers name is Hannah,
do you have them in any early census or any information whatsoever to help pin point the correct family.I cant actually find a marriage in Tynemouth parish for Peter and Hannah, maybe someone else can .
