Michael EGAN (b.1847)
« on: Tuesday 01 June 10 04:45 BST (UK) »
I have been searching for the parents of Michael Egan (b.1847) who married Jane Donohoe in 1870 and was resident in NSW. On the birth certificate of his second or third son "Patrick Egan" (1872-1963) the informant was "Patrick Egan" who described himself as Father of Emu Plains and I think that means father to Michael. Can anyone assist in confirming Michael's parents?

Thank you for your prompt replies wimbush75 and ~Merlin~
Michael's birth certificate indicates under Issue: 2 males living;
William and Mary appear to have only one possible previous child registered in NSW which was MARTHA ( V1840338 145/1840).  Michael may have been the second child, although I found no registry entry for his death, with the parents stated.
They may have immigrated before 1846 and had other issue. I have found three possible age correlations:
1. Michael EGAN 35, wife Bridget 38, John 5, Michael 3, Mary A (baby) arrived Port Adelaide on 10-10-1849 on Cheapside from London. (Possibly the SA branch of the EGAN name)
3. Michael arriving on Abysinnian from Tipperary on Sept 20 1859. (Possibly the QLD branch of the EGAN name)
2. I have elimated Michael Egan aged 3 arrived aboard the Harry Lorrequer, on March 14, 1851. This family settled in Victoria.

Civil registration did not begin in NSW until 1856, so it would be a baptism entry for Michael in 1846, not a birth certificate.  Are you saying that the baptism entry has a note of previous issue?  Michael's age and place of birth should be given on Patrick's 1872 birth certificate   ???

This is an extract dated 17 Nov.1890 and states at the bottom "I, Charles Hart Townley Pinhey, do hereby certify that the above is a true copy of an entry in a Register of Births kept at the Registry General's Office, Sydney". Michael's age and place of birth is 25 years and he was born in Ireland.

So Michael came to Australia sometime between his birth around 1847 and his marriage in 1870.  Do you have his parents' names from his marriage certificate?  If he immigrated as an adult, the shipping records often give family details, and if he came with his parents then their names will help to find the right Michael.  Just having a quick look, I can see a 12 year old in 1859 who might be him with a widowed mother Bridget (father Patrick dead) and siblings.

Yes I have the marriage certificate which shows Michael was a widower, and there is unfortunately no entry for the parents of either Jane or Michael. I have not been able to trace the previous marriage.
I believe a 12 year old Michael was aboard the Abyssinian and daughter Maria who married A.Pollock of Camperdown, Sydney was the depositor.

There is a tree on Ancestry that states Michael died 1925 at Murrumburrah.

The NSW entry for that death shows parents as Patrick and Bridget Ref #2824
