McNEILS in Victoria
« on: Monday 31 May 10 15:40 BST (UK) »
My father, who died in 1965 and had already lost touch with most of his family, once told me that some of his relatives had emigrated to Australia.  By a happy coincidence I learnt from a contributor to Rootschat that they were my father's aunt, Helen Leishman WIlson and her husband, William James McNeil, who were married in Glasgow in 1892 and went to Victoria.  There they had four children, two of them born in Fairfield: John in 1893 and Jean Mitchell in 1895.  William George was born in Northcote in 1900 and Malcolm in Armadale in 1902.  They may have had more children subsequently in another state in Australia.  If anyone reading this knows anything about these people or their descendants, I'd love to hear from them.  Since I live in the UK I'm rather ignorant as to how to trace them any further.

www.naa.gov.au
has a digitised WW1 Service record for a William George MCNEIL which may fit your William George.
Select record search on right hand side of page, select search now as guest, put name into search box, 2 results should appear, select 1st result and click on blue "R".
This record indicates that his father was in South Australia

Thank you very much Leanne and Wimbush1975 for replying to my post.  The only St Peters I can find in Australia in my atlas is Saint Peter Island which looks very small and remote.  And can you tell me where Mitcham cemetery is?  I can't find Tusmore in either of my atlases, so imagine it must be very small or has been renamed.  I'm really grateful to you both in helping me piece together my father's family history and hope to make more discoveries about this Australian branch in the future.

Here is a website for Mitcham cemetery

http://www.mitchamcouncil.sa.gov.au/site/page.cfm?u=1239

If you use Googlemap you can easily find Old Belair Rd, Mitcham and if you use the satellite view you can see the cemetery.

Tusmore and St Peters are suburbs of Adelaide  - put "South Australia" in the search bar after the district/suburb names and you will see them.

I note in the WW1 records for their son (Link given by ennael) he gives his address in 1918 as 148 Payneham Rd, St Peters, South Australia which you can find on Googlemap.
