Glassworks

Hi anyone know of a glassworks in Alloa.I have an ancestor on the 1841 census living at Castle St who was a glassmaker/bottlemaker.

There has been a factory there since 1750 in Alloa and it is still operational today.

Hi Steve, the glassworks in 1840s Alloa was simply called - "Alloa Glass Work Co. Ltd".

It was established in 1750 and originally specialised in dark green bottles. It's close proximity to the old dock area of Alloa was choice in the position of the factory.

Today the glassworks in Alloa still stand on the same spot as it did at the very beginning although it has gone through alot of transformation since then and the dock no longer sees glass bottles leaving the shores of the River Forth!

Castle Street in Alloa is only seconds away from the glassworks by foot.

thanks Mark,sorry for late reply.The ancestor i was researching later moved to Northumberland and worked at a glassworks at Seaton Sluice.Thanks for the info.

It's still there.  I have several relatives who work there.  Called OI now I think.

If you find the site 'Britain from the Air' which is aerial photos from c1925 there are some of the glasswork. Type in 'Alloa'.
