roscommon/townlands

Hi
I am still a little unsure what a townland is, for example Fourmilehouse as i understand  is in Ballinderry townland  in the county of Roscommon.
Is Ballinderry an actual town/village a place on a map? If it is a place on a map then how does Fourmile house fit in to the geography of the place.
Fourmilehouse is the place were my greatgrand parents were married in the Roman Catholic parish of Kilbride.

Fourmilehouse is a village or population centre within the townland of Ballinderry. A townland is the smallest division of land in Ireland, and would in turn be part of a civil parish, which would be part of a county.

Townlands are often not shown on modern maps but will be included on the 1st edition OSI maps - see Four Mile House, Co. Roscommon  (click on the historic or historic bw option to see the old maps) Four Mile House is not specifically marked on the old map. I dont see a townland of Ballinderry in the area at the moment but will have a closer look later on.

I found the location of the townland of Ballinderry on the 1st edition map - it's just to the east of Four Mile House, and near to the Roscommon road.

In the townland on the map is a caption stating 'RC Chapel'.. so it could fit with the location of the Church mentioned in the other recent thread. The church looks to be a little over a kilometer to the east (as the crow files) of the location marked a four Mile House on modern maps. Scroll the map south a little to see the townland name.

Ballinderry Townland (click historic option for the older map)   map is dated 1820s to 1840s

Kilbride 1835 - 1881 film 989749. Possible 1865 - 1881 film 989747

Current Ordnance Survey Road maps (approx. one inch to the mile), known as "1:50.000 Discovery Series", includes most townland names but not the townland boundaries. The Discovery Series maps are inexpensive and are readily available from specialist map retailers worldwide. They can be purchased on line from www.irishmaps.ie Often the maps are listed on eBay – search eBay for “Roscommon”   all categories.
