Just noticed that the witness is William Roberts- wonder if it's the same one?

(ages are wrong in 1891- poor copy)

Well well well :)     John Edwards occ Ship's Cook on son's marriage certificate and occ Ship's Steward on his own certificate are not dissimilar are they?

I was thinking on those lines and if this is correct - dad died when John was very young so it could well have been altered slightly through the years.

I hope it is - although how it could be proven I don't know.

Hi Scouse_mouse

On the attestation papers is the word Spain or Spanish.  Perhaps John Edwards' father died in Spain (at sea?) and the form was misread somehow?

H, sorry for not getting back sooner been away for couple of days. Some great leads to follow up on thanks. As to your last reply, it states Spanish on my grandfathers attestation papers for the nationality of his dad John edwards. This is what has caused so much confusion as the 1911 census has him born in liverpool, and as my grandfather and apparantly John Edwards where all dark skinned with black hair and brown eyes and the family always thought that someone along the line was from spain, not this may have been his John's mother but just so hard to pinpoint.

Heywood, thanks for the information. It would'nt take much to go from steward to cook over the years and the fathers name is correct. Still puzzled as to where this Spanish Nationality came from as one usually did not take your wife with you when you went to sea, especially a steward.

But this is very promising anyway. Many Thanks Again

Hello,
just catching up after a few days absence. It is odd re Spanish Nationality - and would be difficult to sort out.
Good luck with it all
