Brookfield Unitarian Church, Gorton - christening records?
« on: Thursday 27 May 10 19:47 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know where the post 1881 baptism records can be found for Brookfield Unitarian Church, Gorton?

I note that Manchester Archives and Local Studies, Manchester Central Library, hold:

    * Baptisms 1732-1881
    * Marriages 1864-1881
    * Burials 1785-1881

 - but they do not seem to have anything for after that date.

It seems the church is longer there:
"The building was sold to a Housing Association and converted into retirement homes after becoming disused and derelict for a number of years"
http://www.robertsiddall.btinternet.co.uk/recent.html

Are the later records perhaps held by the Unitarian Church? (or is it that they just no longer exist?)
I would be very grateful if anyone can shed some light on this. Thanks.

I read the extract you've quoted as referring to the old school building - the church is still there - I found it on Google StreetView (716 Hyde Road, Manchester is the "address" for the photo). You can see the housing association buildings to the right of the church on there.

If you go to the Unitarian Church's website this link gives you the address for the church and a contact:

Hi i did contact the chap who runs this website once i think for burial records, but it was a while ago and the old grey brain matter doesn't seem to be working that well today  ::)
So it may also be worth you drooping him a line and asking if he knows what happened to the records your after ( might mention the burial records to please as i won't have time just now) and do any of them still exist?
Migky  ;)

Hi
I am doing an ecclesiastical course at the moment looking at various religions.  Unfortunately I have not come across the Unitarians.  However, I have learned that for central administration records for the Methodists (considered a  newer protestant dissent religion) these are deposited at the John Rylands Library in Manchester, which might be worth a look.  For various Presbyterians & Congregationalists records (considered an Old Protestant Dissent religion) there are a number of these at the Dr Williams Library in London -  which is the research library for Protestant non-conformity. I don't if the Unitarian's were considered an Old Protestant dissent religion or a new one!  I also think it would be worth looking at TNA records (A2A) to see if they have anything. :)
