Hi Gadget
Just received the marriage certificate which states he was 30 yrs old (born 1857) and his father was Alexander Mackenzie a farm steward.
Am now looking for an Alexander Mackenzie born Ross and Cromarty with a father Alexander a farm steward - might you have any ideas please?
Many thanks
Phil

Having a look but still only finding that George - will have to do some more searching.

Could it be that he was illegitimate and recorded under a different surname and then took his 'real' father's named? This was quite a usual thing in Scotland.

I'll get back to you  :)

Hi again, Phil

I'll reply with any further info on your R& C thread as his birth and early life was there and so, I think, it's a more appropriate board to find and report on these:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,458590.0.htm

His first son was named George. The last available census information that we have on him is that he was born in Poolewe, R & C. The info that I've already found on that thread points to a George and not an Alexander. I think he might well have got confused.

See you on your other thread when I find more.

Hi Gadget
Finally been able to find out more about Alexander. He was buried on 11th Aug 1931. The cemetery records show his age as 77/79 - they must not have been too sure either!! Can you possibly suggest which may have been the "best fit" for Alexander Mackenzie of Poolewe with this information please? Unfortunately I was unable to find the first marriage information at Durham archives.
Many thanks again for your help.
Best wishes
Phil
