can any one tell me the name of the Hotel which was burned down
opposite the bus station in Whitehaven. Also the year it happened.?

The Grand Hotel
Don't know the year, but it was snowing ...
It was still there in 1921 ....

It was originally the Lonsdale but ended its life as the Grand.
The fire started on the evening of 20 Jan 1940. The weather was certainly cold as the shell of the building was covered with icicles the following day.
