For anyone still following this search for the parents of Roswell Ranney, I have an intriguing possibility:
Joel Ranney (1774-1819) and wife, Polly Buck (1777-1858) moved from Connecticut to Franklin County, Ohio in 1817.  According to their son Joel's obituary, quoted in the appendix section of the Middletown Upper Houses (Ranney) book, he was one of 10 children of Joel and Polly.  So far I have identified five of the children and they are: Mary Ann (1800), Joel (1802), Sylvester (1807), Hatsel (1811) and John (1815).  Has anyone found any information identifying the other five.  From other clues I am finding, Roswell may be one of them.
