Roswell Ranney - Ohio
« on: Wednesday 26 May 10 13:09 BST (UK) »
I am searching for the father of Roswell Ranney, born in Ohio around 1815-1820.  Roswell married Anna Jayne (alternate spellings "Jane", "Janes") daughter of William and Sarah, in Erie, Ohio on 26 December 1841.  They had children "Amos Drayton" and "Emily L." Ranney, then Roswell died and Anna remarried Robert Colton.

I can follow this Ranney line right up to the current day but have been unable to back trace past Roswell.  With five Roswell Ranneys on my chart you'd think I'd be able to slide him right in. :'(

Would this be him?

CHOLERA IN CASTALIA.
We learn that Roswell Ranney, a cabinet maker, formerly from this city, died last night at Castalia, also Mr. Martin, a miller.
There were no new cases this morning, (8th.)

That very likely is him.  I had previously found an index to a series of obituaries that listed a Roswell Ranney from Erie County, Ohio who died on August 9, 18__ .  His age was listed as 23/29.  The August 8, 1849 on your document fits.   So it looks like he was a cabinet maker, Castalia figures into his location and he died of cholera.  This should give me something to work on as I search for his illusive parents.

Thank you very much, Ohio Susan.

The earliest I have him is 1841, where he shows up in Erie County, Ohio marrying Anna Jayne.  The interesting thing about that location is that when you run the name Ranney under marriages in Erie County, Ohio during that period you also come up with a F.M. Ranney and a Hannah Ranney, both of who are around the same age.  F.M. is Frank Moses, son of Moses Ranney and Miranda Rogers  - I have them on my chart.  As for Hannah, I have no idea.  I was actually toying with the possibility that Roswell was another son of Moses that I hadn't previously identified.

I was just re-reading my last post and realized I had the "possible" link out by a generation.  Frank Moses Ranney is not around the same age as Roswell; Frank Moses Ranney's father was Moses Ranney.  Moses is around Roswell's age.  Moses' parents were Comfort Ranney and Betty Hubbard.  Moses, Roswell (and the Hannah I mentioned) would be of an age where they could be siblings.

Just thought I had better clear that up for anyone who may be following along. :-\

I am also searching for parents and information on Roswell Ranney. I  come from a line of Roswell Ranney and Sarah "Sallie" Jayne's daughter Emily Ranney. Emily married Simeon Herring and they lived in the Illinois/ Wisconsin areas. I know very little about the Ranney family, so any help would be great!

It is really strange how Roswell has left no trail, especially with the Ohio Ranney's being so well documented.  I still believe he is connected somehow to the Comfort Ranney / Betty Hubbard line, but can't add him in until I see something definitive.  I have absolutely no problem following his family line right up to the present day but going backwards, it ends at Roswell.

Here's a link to my chart.  I have close to 3,000 Ranneys on it.  It may help you with some of your research:
