Frederick John Yeates
« on: Wednesday 26 May 10 12:03 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Can anyone help me solve a mystery?

I know my great grandfather Frederick John Yeates was born in Blackrock, Dublin c1875.
The 1881 English census shows him as John Yates aged 6 born Dublin living in Liverpool with his father Frederick (born Dublin) his mother Gertrude born Liverpool, his 4 year old sister Marion and 1 year old brother Arthur.

I can find no trace of Frederick in the 1891 and 1901 English census. I have found Marion and Arthur living with relatives in 1891 (surname incorrectly spelt ‘Yates’).

I have searched using both names Frederick and John and all variation of the surname spelling.

The options I am left with are that he was either at sea (although he was a glass bottle maker when he married in Liverpool in 1902) or maybe he had temporarily gone to Ireland or elsewhere?  Has anyone any suggestions as to where I can take my search from here?

Thanks

Lorraine

I am sure this must be a reasonably common name but in the Irish Memorials there is a Frederick John Yeates who died 1918, he was born Dublin. A Bombadier in the Royal Garrison Artillery, No 211298. Killed in action in France.

His service record is available to view so he was around - married to an Ada Suzanna (service records) living in Liverpool but born 1880.

Just need to clarify and check my facts here - wondered if he was in the army for the census.

Hi Tressle,

You have identified my great-grandfather correctly. I know he enlisted in Liverpool during WW1 but don't know when.

I know where he was in 1881 and then from 1902 onwards. The 21 years in between are the mystery.

The army records I have located for him do not mention my great-grandmother Ada. Which resource did you use ? I have a copy of his death certificate and know where is his buried but no details of where he served, dates etc

Many thanks

Lorraine

Hi

His army papers say his address at time of enlistment was 58 Freeman Street, Edge Hill, Liverpool and he attested on the 15th May 1915 - giving his age as 35 and his occupation as a Bottle Blower.  He took the oath at Chester.

He married Ada Suzanna Tither......? on the 19th April 1902 at Liverpool Registry Office.  6 children named on papers.

A different address is given when Ada is a widow - looks like Cullen Street.

It states his full brother is an Arthur Yeates aged 38 who lives at Collingwood Street, Boston, USA and his full sister is Marion Johnson aged 40 of Highgate Hill, South Brisbane, Australia.

Because of Arthur and Marion both heading overseas I had a look to see if he had travelled with either of these overseas but no luck.  I can't be 100% sure but I think they went after the 1901 census.

My grandfather disappears from 1891 to 1918 so perhaps there was a black hole they both dropped into....... ;D

Hi Tressle,

Thanks for that. I knew a fair amount of the information you sent. My great-grandmother's maiden name was Titherington. I also know about my grandfather's 5 brothers.

However, as I said previously, I did not know the date Frederick enlisted.

Also, I did not have addresses for his brother and sister. I have made contact with Marion's descendants in Australia. Maybe now I know that Arthur went to Boston I might find distant relatives in the USA.

I do have the dates that Marion and Arthur went overseas and it was well after the 1901 census. I have found Arthur in the 1901 census but he was not living with Frederick. He also was a glass bottle maker.

Maybe one day our relatives will emerge from the black hole!

Thanks again.

Lorraine

PS Thanks for the second post. Maybe I have not been able to find him before because his place of birth is incorrect. I'm sure it's him as he was known by the family as John.
