The next time I can find any information is Gundagia NSW where the family must have settled.

Hi Bev,

Just a small clarification, with the name Gundagai, (the a and i around the other way) pronounced gun-da-guy.  An unusual name, probably of aboriginal derivation.

Cheers,
Alison  :)

Bev,

I am looking for info about a John Manton who married into my Seary family in 1845.

Not your John Manton obviously but I found this which may help you:

iii.   Martha SUTTON was born 1869 in Romford, Essex, England, and died 22 Aug 1912 in Adelong, NSW. She married John MANTON 1902 in Tumut, NSW, son of William MANTON and Sarah SWAIN. He was born 1849 in Kidderminster, Worcester, England, and died 3 Apr 1927 in Adelong, NSW.

Thanks Felicity.

Your information is correct.

I have, since first posting this, found out a lot of information on the Manton family. It has been an interesting "ride".

Thanks again
Bev

Hi Bev,

I realise your OP was quite some time ago, and your "ride" has been interesting  ;D

I noticed that on the 1870 NSW Electoral Roll for The Murrumbidgee there's a John MANTON, resident of Wagga.  I realise that Adelong's electorate was The Tumut, however Manton is not among the "Top of the Pops" list of popular surnames... and I have not found any with that surname listed for The Tumut in either 1870 or 1878.

In 1878 for The Murrumbidgee NSW ER there's several surnamed MANTON:
John Adolphus, freeholder at Wagga
John Adolphus, leaseholder at Wagga
Frederick, residence at Kimo  (in Police district of Gundagai which extended across parts of both The Murrumbidgee and The Tumut electorates).

I noticed that your OP indicates that you are not sure what has happened to John but there is a possibility he was buried in Adelong

Cheers,  JM

Sorry, I thought you said you had no connection to this Manton family.

As far as I am aware no other relatives of this family immigrated to Australia.

My John is buried in Adelong. He had three siblings, Selina, my G Grandmother, also buried Adelong & Elizabeth who were born in Kidderminster England and Alfred who was born on route to Australia and his birth is registered in Melbourne.  This family grew up in Gundagai NSW.

Hi Bev,
My gg grandmother was Charlotte Booby whose brother Arthur Booby married Louisa Manton I believe. I have an old photo we were told was of Louisa Manton (and possibly Louisa Fuller). Let me know if you'd like a copy I'll happily send one.
