MANTON Family
« on: Tuesday 25 May 10 11:15 BST (UK) »
: Hello,
I am trying to trace my ancestors. William M Manton who married Sarah Swain 25 Dec 1845 in Kidderminster, Worcester, England.
The Manton Family immigrated to Australia, on the ship "Marion Moore", departing LIverpool UK and arriving Melbourne 15th February 1853.

The Family consisted of William and Sarah and children Selina & John, (who I think were twins as per the 1850 UK census, both Selena & John's ages are given as 5) and Elizabeth. Alfred was born in Melbourne Victoria after they arrived.

William was sponsored for 12 months by Felton & Chadwick, Lower Murray for 12 months for 50 pounds..

Selina born 5 Jul 1846 in Kidderminster, Worcester, England married my Great grandfather Alfred James Dean in Gundagai NSW Australia, 19 Jan 1862 under the name of Selina Clark. ?? why. As she was only 15/16 years old at that time. We are assuming that she stated her age at 18 to get married. She gave her name on my grand parents marriage certificate as Selina Manton. She died at age 33, death certificate states from lung congestion, and is buried in Adelong NSW Australia after having 9 children.
My grandfather was only 9 days old.

The next time I can find any information is gundagai NSW where the family must have settled. Elizabeth and Alfred were married in Gundagai and Alfred died there. Elizabeth married Thomas Field in 1871 and Alfred married Louisa Fuller in 1875. Louisa Booby is the daughter of Alfred.

I am not sure what has happened to John but there is a possibility he was buried in Adelong.

I cannot find any reference for William and Sarah. I would be grateful if anyone can share any information which may lead to the resting place for this couple and also any information relating to John.
Thank you
Bev

Hi,

I think she would have needed to be 21 to marry without her parents permission.
Do you have the marriage certificate or transcription, thatat would give you witnesses and whoever gave permission for her to marry.

The name Clark at Tumut/Adelong has me interested as I am missing some Clark's from that area.

Have you been able to find any cemetery records from Adelong?

HI Bevcal

If you can give exact dates - i.e. day and month plus the year for the deaths and marriages you have I'd be happy to have a hunt in the Adelong and Gundagai papers for any mentions.  Some local papers hve good obits and wedding descriptions.  They are filmed in date order though so it's too hard to go through a whole year's worth.

Probably won't get to the library till later in the week.

Cheers, Judith

Hi Bev,

Not answering your question, but just a bit about the children and ages.

Marian Moore, 1853

William MANTON, 29, WEAVER
Sarah MANTON, 28
Selina MANTON, 6
John MANTON, 3
Elizabeth MANTON, 2
Plus a male infant born onboard (this would be Alfred?)

On the 1851 census, John's age was mistakenly written in the female column as 5m (months), and the 5 was crossed out and moved to the male column.
