robert nathaniel mindry
« on: Tuesday 25 May 10 11:01 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,

I trust you are all well.
I am looking for the parents of ROBERT NATHANIEL MINDRY.  He was born 16 September 1881 in Portsea Hampshire, and eventually emigrated to South Africa.  I have not found his name on a passenger list, as yet.  Could sks please see whether they can find him in the 1891 census, or his parents in prior censuses.

Many thanks and kind regards

Jackie

Do you know  his parents names to help with a census search, but there is this likely looking family  sailing to South Africa, the eldest son is the right age.

On the WARRNAMBOOL which sailed form Southampton to Durban (Port Natal), South Africa  15 July 1893
 Mr MINDRY 36
 Mrs MINDRY 34

Thank you Jebber for your reply.
I do not know his parents names.  I only have his date of birth from the family bible and had a look on freebmd for his birth.

Kind regards
Jackie

I am so confused now.

I found 1881 census for Frederick Robert Mindry Bc1847 Hampshire, married to Grace Duke B c1849. Son Frederick RObert Mindry B1881 and Stepson Alfred Henry Duke B c1873, plus a niece and nephew.

I have a marriage in 1879 Portsea between a Frederick Robert Mindry and Mary Ann Warner.

On IGI there are two sons of Robert Mindry and Mary Ann, namely:
Frederick Robert Mindry christened 12-9-1858 St Mary's, Portsea;  and
Alfred George William Mindry christened 22-4-1855 St Mary's, Portsea.

Robert Nathaniel Mindry is shown to have parents Frederick Robert Mindry and Mary Ann Warner.  This Robert Nathaniel married firstly to Ellen Jane Heslop in 1903 in Natal, South Africa and then secondly to Martha Sophia Manning, from which their 2nd born son is named Alfred George William Mindry Born 1920 in South Africa.

Robert Mindry married Mary Ann Roberts/Rikard in 1847 Stoke Damerel (Vol 9 Pg 603) and had:
1.Frederick Robert Mindry Born 1858 Portsea (Vol 2b Pg 363) chris 1858 Portsea married Mary Ann Warner in 1879 Portsea
2.Alfred George William Mindry chris 1855 Portsea married Selena Alberta Smith in 1880 Portsea (Vol 2b Pg 823)

Frederick Robert Mindry B c1857 (1 above)  had Robert Nathaniel Mindry Born 1881 Portsea. (Vol
Alfred George William Mindry Bc1855 (2 above) had Frederick Robert Mindry born 1880 Portsea.

There is also a Mary Jane Mindry B 1849 Portsea marrying in 1876 Portsea to an Alexander Saunders or Joseph Singleton D Richardson (Vol 2b Pg 938) She could be a sister to 1 and 2 above.

Then there is that passenger list for the Mindry’s previously posted.  It shows 5 children.

Can anyone help me find my way through this?

Many thanks and kind regards
Jackie

Hi Jebber,

Where did you find the passenger list for 1893?  Are you positive it is 1893 ?  The eldest son of 8 years old, would bring him to being born 1885 and not 1881.  Do you know how they rounded up ages for the passenger lists?

I now know that Robert Nathaniel's parents were Alfred George William Mindry and Selina Alberta Smith, who were married in 1880 in Portsea.
Alfred is in the 1861 census with his mother, Mary, and siblings, Mary and Henry.
In 1871 i cannot find him, but then he comes up in a marriage of 1880 to Selina Alberta and again in 1881 on board HMS Glatton as Ships Steward.

Kind regards
Jackie

Hi Jackie,

Yes, definitely 1893. The lists are on www.findmypast.co.uk it is a subscription site. I am not aware of the ages being anything other than as stated on the passenger lists.

Alfred has been enumerated twice in 1881, both on board ship and with his wife Selina in Portsea, only they are recorded as MINDSAY not MINDRY.

I can't help much at the moment, my computer went bang the other day  and started emitting smoke, so it is in for repair, I am reduced to an old laptop which is so slow it is like watching paint dry.

Regards, Jebber

I can sympathise with you in a slow computer.  I have had that and i think i lost it eventually:)
Interesting to see that Alfred Mindry is enumerated twice.  His father was also enumerated twice in 1871.  Not sure what the guys were doing in those days.

Thanks for letting me know.

Kind regards
Jackie
