Yeates in Stafford, Staffordshire
« on: Sunday 23 May 10 09:45 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I am trying to locate ancestors - who are on the 1911 Census as all being born in Stafford, Staffordshire;

John Yeates - born abt. 1866 - I know he was a shoe maker/shoe operative
His wife - Jessie Yeates - born abt. 1868
Children;
May Rose Yeates - born abt. 1896 (Married Frederick Jenks on 2nd April 1918 in Mansfield, Notts)
Ada Yeates - born abt. 1898
Jessie Yeates - born abt. 1900
Doris Yeates - born abt. 1902

I cannot find any other Census leads or birth details for them.

I have tried Yeats & Yates with no success - and I am thinking maybe they were not born in Staffordshire.
I have tried different variations and cannot find any of them.
If anyone can help that would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!  :)

Hiya Lianne.....try www.familysearch.org.uk and put in Yeates      1898   10 years difference  and England

then put in each Christian name ......there are results in Stafford for all the names ...BUT NOT the years you have for them....so I wouldn`t be too hopeful.....but maybe you will see something you recognise.
as an example it has Ada babtised 1893 St John the Evangelist church, Hanley ,Stafford....nowhere near your date
so probably a complete waste of time....but have a look anyway....allan
oakes,liverpool..neston..backford..poulton cum spittal(bebington)middlewich,cheshire......   sacht,helgoland  .......merrick,herefordshire adams,shropshire...tipping..ellis..  jones,garston,liverpool..hartley.dunham massey..barker. salford

Hi both,

Not much help regarding 1901 or John, but the only John Yeat(e)s to Jessie marriage that FreeBMD finds is:

Dec 1894 Northampton 3b 133
John Yeates to possibly Jessie Mary Read

Earlier censuses show a Jessie Read of the right age, born Stafford:
http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=uki1881&indiv=try&h=18933071
RG11/2689 96 26

(she's living in Northamptonshire in 1891)

check it out yourself...all born Wolstanton, Staffordshire  as YATES...PROBABLY THE WRONG FAMILY / WRONG DATES / WRONG WAY AROUND...BUT A COINCIDENCE THE NAMES MATCH
Ada dec qtr 1899  Wolstanton 6b 94
Doris b mar qtr 1900 Wolstanton 6b 156
May June qtr 1902 Wolstanton   6b 134
Jessie dec qtr 1903 Wolstanton 6b 112

OK so the closeness of ADA`s registration and Doris`s registration implies that they are not sisters...but it is possible that Ada was registered quite a bit after her birth....I think I`m clutching at straws here....lol....allan :-[

Thank you!!!! I can't believe you both found the leads I have quite literally been searching for months! I have no idea why they are called Turner - but everything else matches!! Even the shoe occupation! Thanks so much for your help!!  ;D I can't wait to tell my Mum.

I think I've solved the Turner/Yeates mystery too  :)

1881
RG11/2690 27 22
Stafford St Mary, Staffordshire
4 New St

Emma Turner, wife, mar, 42, b. Sussex Eastbourne
Thomas, son, 19, Shoemaker Putter-up, b. Stafford
John, son, 16, Shoemaker Putter-up, b. do.
Lizzie, dau, 13, scholar, b. do.
Herbert, son, 10, scholar, b. do.
Arthur, son, 8, scholar, b. do.
Ada, dau, 3, b. do.
Samuel Phillips, lodger, mar, 30, Millwright, b. London

Same family in 1871: RG10/2818 18 30

and 10 years earlier, Emma is the wife of an Augustus Yeates RG9/1907 122 14

I'm struggling to find a marriage George Turner/Emma Yeates so far, or ID little John's birth in either name.

There's a John Yeates, Staffford Dec 1863 but it's one year out. Staffordshire BMD shows a mother's maiden name of Trusler. Let's see if it helps ruling him out or confirm ...
