Hughes family 1901 Spencer Rd, Derry
« on: Sunday 27 March 05 12:59 BST (UK) »
My great gradparents Robert Hughes and his wife May (Young) lived at spencer road - derry at the time of the 1901 census.  My grandfather Thomas (who moved to Edn and married Helen Millan was the second child.  I would appreciate any information on my great grandparents or any of the children.  Mary died in waterside area in 1925 - but I visited Derry in Dec 04 but could not find the family grave.

Hello Nellie,

I'm surprised no one has yet posted a message to you asking which faith was followed by your great grandparents. You did not offer the information and yet it is one of the most important pieces of information that is required by a genealogy researcher.

Best Wishes,

Christopher

Re Hughes family at Spencer Road, Derry at 1901. Family were presbyterian and worshipped at the Strand (2nd Derry) but were not buried in the graveyards normally associated with this church.

Hello Nellie,

Irish Ancestors Surname Search shows there were 74 Hughes who were head of household during the period 1848 - 1864. During the same period there were families of both the names of Hughes and Young living in practically every county in Ireland.
http://scripts.ireland.com/ancestor/index.cfm

Unless they were buried at a different graveyard in Derry it is possible there was a family graveyard in a different town and possibly in a different county - I would suggest Co. Tyrone as the number of both surnames in that County is close to the top in both lists.

Best Wishes,   Christopher

Thanks for all your advice Christopher.  I know what you mean re different towns - there is another Robert Hughes and Mary Young in Strabane for instance.  But I know my Mary died in Olive Street, Waterside, Derry in 1925 but cannot trace her grave.

Hiya Nellie,

I've just replied to RootsChat re: Robert Hughes/Mary Yound Londonderry.

I wonder if the correct address was 3, Olive Terrace, Spencer Road, Waterside.

Mary, Robert and Samuel Hughes, 3, Olive Terrace, Waterside, Derry signed the 1912 Ulster Covenant.

Nellie- did you try Derry City Cemetery? Their records are fantastic- birthplace, religion, parents' names, etc. all in register!
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!
