George Thomas Wilson
« on: Saturday 22 May 10 21:08 BST (UK) »
Hi
I'm trying to find information on the parents of one George Thomas Wilson, who was apparently born in Thirsk in 1869. George married a girl called Margaret Hewison and had the following children: Olive M, Robert E, George H and William Ernest. William Ernest was my grandfather. I have George Thomas' marriage certificate, which says that his father was called Edward Askwith Wilson. However, I cannot seem to trace any information on Edward Askwith Wilson, nor do I seem to be able to find the correct birth certificate for George Thomas. (I have bought several so far, none of them have Edward Askwith down as the father.)
Any help at all out there please?

Hi Chrissie

In 1911 census he gives his place of birth as Bagby Nr Thirsk.

I think this is probably him in 1881

Little Sowerby

Thomas SAYERS, H, M, 38, Ag. lab, Kiernowl (later censuses show this as Kirby Knowle)
Hannah SAYERS, Wife, M, 34, Bagby
George WILSON, son, 11, Bagby
Tom, WILSON, son, 7, Canada
Emma WILSON, dau., 3, Warrenby

It does say son/dau. and not stepchildren but who knows?

There is a marriage on FreeBMD between Thomas SAYERS and Hannah WILSON in 12/1880 in Thirsk district 9d/800 which looks promising.

The only obvious birth for George is 9/1869, Thirsk 9d/359. I presume this is a certificate you already have - does the information on there tie in with any I have provided??

I think this marriage certificate would provide some information.  If Hannah is shown as "Widow" you have something to work back from.  If she's shown as "spinster" it's possible that Thomas was a little inventive on his marriage certificate!!

Cheers

Gina

Hi again,

This looks like him in 1891

Shildon RG12/4071/19

Robert SPROATES, H, M, 35, Steam engine fitter, Bishop Auckland
Sarah H. SPROATES, W, 30, Slingsby
Francis W. SPROATES, son, 7, Shildon
Sarah SPROATES, dau., 4, Shildon
Emily SPRAOTES, dau., 6m, Shildon
George WILSON, Boarder, S, 22, Coal miner, Thirsk
Thomas WILSON, Boarder, S, 17, Coal miner, Canada

I can't find George or Hannah (his mother) on 1871 Census but as Thomas was born c1874 in Canada it's possible they were all out there for a while and came back before Emma was born in 1878.

Hi Gina
Thanks very much, that all looks very possible. I had already found the 1891 census and wondered if that was him, but not the 1881 census. That marriage certificate definitely looks worth buying, and it does look like perhaps Hannah was married to George's father before she married Thomas Sayers. On George's marriage certificate it does say that his father Edward Askwith was deceased.

As far as the birth certificate is concerned, I do have the one you suggest but it has his father down as Thomas Wilson and his mother as Jane Ann Pattison. This doesn't fit - especially not with the information about his father on his marriage cert.

Cheers and thanks again
