Brickmaker Uttoxeter Road Rowditch Derby
« on: Saturday 22 May 10 16:54 BST (UK) »
I found this in the 1841 Census for my ancestor Joseph Harpur, who was baptised 31 May 1779: that he was a brick maker at Uttoxeter Road. In the registration of his daughters marriage to her second husband, he is discribed as being of Rowditch Derbyshire.
I then discoverd that he was mentioned as a Freeholder. He died aug 1853 and was wealthy because there was a sale by auction of various houses and parcels of land.
The I found that there was a Rowditch farm which was built in the 18th century but was gradually taken over by a junior branch of the Harpur family for brick making.
Question:
Is there any photo of said building? Are there any copies of newspapers/documents etc? Is the Harpur family known in Rowditch?
I think Joseph Harpur's father was Thomas. His wife was Hannah, but I do not know her last name.
Any help would be great.

You should also research his will.

Thank you, I looked at Uttoxeter, but could find no links.
I am wondering if there is a link to the Harpur Crew family. I have applied for the will of Joseph and am receiving it shortly.

This is a photo of Rowditch Farm with the brickworks in the background , it was taken in 1955.
The whole area has been re-developed and is now known as a Kingsway Retail park.

If your family lived in this area they could be buried in Uttoxeter Road Cemetery ?

Thank you so much fo rthe picture. It gives a great idea how it all looked like.
Is there a way of finding out if Joseph Harpur was burried in the Uttoxeter Road cemetary?

Iam glad to help !

The records for Uttoxeter Road Cemetery are at Nottingham Road Cemetery Derby , they have quite a few names on the computer but I don't know if a complete record  of Uttoxeter Road Cemetery is on there.
If you know a exact date of death they will usually look in the books for free but if you don't they may charge a small search fee.

Hello Fofofo,

Although Joseph Harpur died about August 1853, there was still problems re his estate the notice for
High Court of Chancery appear in the Derby Mercury 23.12.1857 and 6.1.1858.

Plaintiff  -  Mary Camp, wife of George Camp, by William Pool (her next friend)

Defendants -  Moreton Charles Wedge, George Peach and the said George Camp

Chancery records are at the National Archives  in "The Catalogue"

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/search.asp

If you put "Harpur" in box "Word or Phrase"
In year range 1853 to 1857
You get the following:-
C 15/382/H71 1857 H71. In the matter of Harpur; Camp v Wedge. Administration summons 1857

Click on this item, the above details are then repeated.
On this page it is important to click on C15 Court of Chancery - which gives further details of how
to discover further information.

Apologies if you already know how to search the Kew Site.
Regards
