Patrick MacCORMACK, RAVC - killed Bloody Sunday 1920
« on: Friday 21 May 10 14:36 BST (UK) »
I am researching Capt Patrick MacCormack (my state of research on him is here)

He was born in Castlebar in 1878, son of Patrick and Kate MacCormack, who owned a large drapery store in Castlebar at that time.

He was apparently a keen amateur jockey, and qualified as a Vet.

He was practicing as a Vet in Castlebar in 1911 census

At some point he joined the RAVC, and served in Egypt.

He was shot in Gresham Hotel in Nov 1920 as one of the Bloody Sunday shootings.

Apparently his   mother Kate to Richard Mulcahy in 1922 to get the IRA to rebut Patrick MacCormack was a spy. There is a copy of this letter from Kate MacCormack to Richard Mulcahy, 23 Mar. 1922, NLI Michael Collins’s papers, A/0535X. But I cannot find a reply. There are a lot of web references saying that Collins admitted that they had made a mistake with Patrick MacCormack, but I cannot find this actually being verified anywhere in Collins papers.

I cannot find where Patrick MacCormack got his Vet qualification.

Any additional information that anyone can give me would be really useful

Hello, I believe Patrick was a nephew of a Bishop of Galway, Dr Francis McCormack who was a native of Ballintubber, Co Mayo.  I have found a brief history of the family which was written by a former priest of Ballintubber, Fr Heaney,  This piece mentions Patrick's killing and gives a good overview of the family's background and genealogy.  I would be delighted to email this to you.  My address is (*).
