Navy man?
« on: Friday 21 May 10 14:09 BST (UK) »
Help.  Our grandfather Arthur Leslie Frizzell was in WW2 Army Australia.  He was supposed to have been in the English Navy in WW1.  Story goes that the ship was torpedoed and he was in the sea for about 3 days.  I cannot find any record.

His Australian record says that he was born 04 Jun 1895 at a place called Aldershot wherever that is ???

Anything found would be appreciated. ;D

I wonder if he lied about his age as there is this birth registration - Arthur Leslie Frizzell, 1900 Q2 District Farnham,  Hampshire Volume 2a  Page 143

Aldershot is in Hampshire. I'm unable to find any possible service history at the National Archives: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/navy.asp for Arthur Frizzell, but maybe someone else will point you in the right direction.

Same here, I cannot see anything in the National Archives.  If he was born later than he said he would only just have been old enough nearer the end of the war I would have thought.  I don't know what the minimum age was.

" He was supposed to have been in the English Navy in WW1." quote

Hi ,
I'm having real  trouble finding a so-called  English Navy  in ww11  ::). I didn't think such a thing existed. Maybe I can find A welsh, or Scottish, or N Irish Navy too In WW2 -   Just a suggestion, maybe It is called the British Navy!!
Kind regards

There is no such thing as the "English Navy"  :) it is The Royal Navy

Hi

This is him in 1901. He would have been 14 at the outbreak of the war so old enough to serve at sometime in either in the merchant or Royal Navy during the war.

1901 census RG13 615 folio 55
Camden Terrace Farnham Surrey
Louisa Frizzell 35 Head Married Farnham Surrey
Florence Smith 12  Daughter Farnham Surrey
Bertha Smith 10 Daughter Ascot Berkshire
John Smith 5 Son Farnham Surrey
Victor Smith 3 Son Aldershot Hants
Arthur Frizzell 8 months Stepson Farnham Surrey
Eliza Frizzell 13 Stepdaughter Farnham Surrey
William Frizzell 11 Stepson Portland Devon
John Frizzell 10 Stepson Portland Devon
Ada Frizzell 8 Stepdaughter Portland Devon
George Frizzell 6 Stepson Portland Devon

Portland is actually in Dorset

1891 census RG12 1650 folio 20
1 Bloomfield Terrace Portland Dorset
Thomas Frizzell 30 Head Married Dorchester Dorset
Jane Frizzell 28 Wife Married Luch? Dorset
Emily Frizzell 8 Daughter Portland Dorset
Eliza P Frizzell 3 Daughter Portland Dorset
Wm C Frizzell 2 Son Portland Dorset
John T Frizzell 4/12 Son Portland Dorset

Marriages Dec 1899
Frizzell  Thomas    Farnham  2a 268
Smith  Louisa     Farnham  2a 268

Arthur is not included in The National Archives online index for 'Campaign Medals awarded to First World War Merchant Seamen' or 'Royal Naval Seamen (1853 - 1923)' for ratings.

It is possible to search the database on place of birth and date of birth

There is an Arthur Leslie Cooper born Farnham who gave his date of birth as 2nd May 1895 (there is a birth registration for this man).
