Turners in Hulme. Please help!
« on: Friday 21 May 10 12:34 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,

I was wondering if some one with more genealogy expertise than I do could help me out with this one.

I'm researching my mothers side. The Turners and have traced them back to Hulme, Manchester to an Ellen Turner (maiden name not known)

She was born in 1838 in Manchester. She worked as a seamstress/dressmaker. I have found her in the 1971,1881 and 1891 censuses.

1871-  12 Phillips St, Hulme. Occ: Seamstress (Married)
1881 -  8 Back Allin St, Chorlton-upon-medlock. Occ: Dressmaker (Married)
1891 -  58 Newcastle St, Hulme Occ: Dressmaker (Widowed)

In 1871 and 1881, Her husband was not listed, but she is still listed as married and by 1891 she is widowed.

Her first child was Ada in 1862 so I assume she was married to ____ Turner around that time.

She had 7 children between 1862 and 1877.

Ada Louise(1862), Kate (1864), William (1867) , Elizabeth (1869), Nellie (1873), Joseph McLean (1873), Matthew Henry (1877)

And that is all I know.

Is there anyone who could work out who she married through this information? or where she was in 1841/1851/1861. I've found multiple listings for Ellen Turners but nothing concrete to go on.

Any pointers or help would be appreciated.

Thank you

Alana

Hi Alana,

A birth cert would confirm this record found on the familysearch pilot site (I have no idea how trustworthy some  of their records are):
http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#start

Christening Ada Louisa Turner
2 March 1862 at Hulme
Father Elisha Turner, mother Ellen Unsholme

Just did a search on Kate and there are 2 matches on their England births and christening 1538-1975 database:
Kate Susan Turner - 29 Oct 1865 Manchester, parents Elisha Turner and Ellen Unthank Turner
Kate Turner - 29 Oct 1865 St Matthews Manchester, parents Elisha Turner and Ellen R Turner

Anyway, an Elisha Turner and Ellen U Turner are on the 1861 census for Ardwick, RG9/2869 42 32, and an Elisha Turner marries an Ellen Unthank Pearson on 12 Nov 1859 at Manchester Cathedral.

Ellen seems to die as Ellen Unthank Turner:
Ellen Unthank Turner age 53, Sep 1891 Chorlton 8c 504

Tati, That is fabulous!

Thank you so much. I've had my eye on her for a little while, but didn't have anything concrete but having three children all born the same year as the children I have records for is pretty good. (if that makes sense)

I'll keep looking in to them and see if I can find anything else.

I really, really appreciate your help!

Seems William's full name was William John Pearson Turner (also christened 29 Oct 1865), which ties in nicely with the marriage of Elisha and Ellen  :)

I wonder if the later children were Elisha's too. I can see him in later censuses, a warehouseman (1881 and 1891) or Cattle Salesman (1871). Unmarried in 1871 and 1891, married in 1881.

Their marital statuses are strange. On the 1871,1881 census it says she is married and on the 1891, widowed.

Is it possible that the rest of the children were not baptized? Did they do that in those days?

Trying to make sense of it is doing my head in!   ::)

Looks like they didn't get on very well  :P

I didn't search for the other children's christenings yet.

Have a look for yourself if there's something online at
www.familysearch.org
http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#start
or

Apparently not!   ;D

Thanks so much for your help anyway. I'll have a nose around on those sites and see what I can find.

Much appreciated!  ;)

I have Ellen Unthank Pearson in my family, she is the sister of my GGGrandmother Ada Henrietta Pearson. She was born 1838 in Manchester to John Pearson and Hannah Henrietta Watson. John was a Tailor, I presume where Ellen got her trade. Ellen married Elisha Turner 12 Nov 1859, Manchester Cathedral, Lancashire, England

I am just getting back into my family history after a good few years break, but I have been researching for over 20 years. If you would like any more information please let me know.

Cheers

Denise

Hi Denise,

I am so happy to hear from you. I'd gotten to a virtual standstill on that side of the tree.

I would love to know more. I am active on ancestry.co.uk and GenesReunited. Are you on either of those?

I also have a lot of information that you might be interested in. Just let me know how I can help you, I am quite happy to.

I will PM you my email and maybe we can talk more about it?
