Hi Evie

Thanks for looking. As far as I know William only had  2 children, George b.abt 1836 (who is the direct ancestor) and Elizabeth, b. abt 1834 (who I think died in 1851 - but I need the cert to confirm it)

I was going to add William to my 'leave it and look at sometime in the future' pile.  :)

Then I had a read back through the posts and saw your comment about Mary Chambers. So I did a bit of searching.

Found marriages in Dec Qtr 1837 in Ecclesfield registration district (which included Dodworth and Darton) which included the names William Buckle and Mary Chambers. What if they were both on a second marriage with George and Elizabeth being from Williams first marriage and the 10 year old Mary Chambers being Marys daughter. Curiosity is getting the better of me so I am going to raid the piggy bank and send for the cert.

I then went back to look at the 1841 census where Inn keeper Sarah Chambers has George Buckle living with the family which included Janet Chambers b.1825.

Also found a marriage between Janet (Jennet) Chambers and Richard Buckle in 1844. Tracked them through later census -  he gives his birthplace as Farnham, same as William and she gives hers as Darton. In 1841 Richard is living with Walter Buckle and family in Brearton, Knaresborough.

Looks like there is a link between the 2 families. Just a shame it is all happening just the wrong side of 1837  ;D

Wow Louise you have been busy. How interesting.

I was wondering if it was a second marriage too or if Mary was the illegitimate daughter of Mary. Hopefully the certificate will confirm one way or the other, please let me know.

I see Richard was the son of Thomas and Ellen christened 4 April 1813 Farnham

"I see Richard was the son of Thomas and Ellen christened 4 April 1813 Farnham"

Which would make him the brother of Walter who he was living with in 1841 and William who was b.1804 and might be my guy  ???

Have ordered the cert, so fingers crossed.

Have also discoverd, thanks to my MIL who from Kexborough, that the church for Darton is All Saints and Dodworth is St John the Baptist. Any idea where the parish records would be?

Hi Evie

William's marriage cert arrived this morning and it is certainly interesting

William Buckle, widower, married Mary Chambers, spinster at Darton on 12 Oct 1837. William is shown as Farmer and his father is Thomas Buckle, Butcher.

Mary's father is Godfrey Chambers. His occupation is virtually unreadable. I think it says coal miner but OH opted for lock keeper  ???

So, Evie you were right. Mary had an illegitimate daughter and William was on his second marriage.

Williams first wife must have died between son George's birth in 1836 and Oct 1837.

The William born in 1804 to Thomas and Ellen Buckle in Scotton/Farnham could be my guy.

Looks like Mary is the daughter of Godfrey and Sarah Chambers.

Now all I need is access to the Darton/Dodworth and Scotton/Farnham Parish Registers  ::)

Excellent Louise, thank you so much for letting me know. :)

I have had a quick look on the 1841 census but cannot see Thomas Buckle as yet, he could have died.

As Sarah Chambers seems to be head it looks like Godfrey has also died which is a shame I was hoping to see his occupation. You couldn't scan that bit could you to see if I can make it out?

I will see if there is anything else to find but I think with the sources available to me probably not.

Hi Louise

You may find this link for Farnham registers interesting. I haven't really searched through them yet although William 1804 was mentioned but no occupation for Thomas.

Hi

Looking at the transcript for Darton in Baine's Directory in 1822 there is a Godfrey Chambers who was the vict. of the Malt Shovel.

Hi

I had a trawl through the Farnham register last night and early this morning......

The Buckles seem to have been in the area for ages - earliest entry is a baptism in 1582!

There was no other William baptised around that time except for the 1804 one. But the register stops at 1812, so I can't find Richard Buckle either  ::)

I couldn't find a marriage for Thomas and Ellen which suggests she was from a different parish.

The search continues  :)
