Balmaine, Dublin ? Does it exist
« on: Thursday 20 May 10 14:11 BST (UK) »
I am researching the Cairo Gang. One of the men shot on Bloody Sunday was Henry Angliss link for my page on him.

The 1911 census gives him born "Co, Dublin, Balmaine" (there is a photo on that linked page of the original census page, if you want to check my transcription)

His war grave information gives him as son of Henry Angliss, of Enniskillen. And Angliss held a commission in Inniskilling Fusiliers when he died.

The 1911 census and his death information point to a birth 1892 or 1893. I cannot find that in Irish State Registers (LDS site)

I have the circumstances of his death fairly well covered. So it would be helpful if we could limit this discussion to the period from his birth to when he joined the army.

With an Irish accent in foreign parts, it is always easy to be misunderstood, and what is written down can be what the (Scottish) listener has thought was said

Trouble here is that I cannot find a Birth in Dublin for an Angliss.

I toyed with it being Inglis ( I remember the Inglis Bakery in Belfast) and that would be pronounced Angliss, but his enite Army record, his marriage and death is based on Angliss.

I might be miles out here but when I read your post the first thing that came to mind was Belmaine Developments. I seem to remember that name from an advertising hoarding in the Malahide Road/Balgriffin area.

Thanks very much. we may be on to something here.

I had not looked at the possibility of "Belmayne" or "Balmayne".

That would be spot on if I could establish that the place was an old name, rather than something manufactured by a developer in the last few years.

Can anyone establish the provenance of the name to around 1900?

I am still trying to track down Henry Angliss birth.

I have got his marriage cert now. He married a Ada Godfrey in Cardiff in 1919. The MC gives Henry Angliss father as:-

Joseph Angliss (deceased) a Sgt Major in 6th Inniskilling Dragoons.

I cannot find if Inniskilling Dragoons were in Ireland around Henry Angliss birth of circa 1892/93. Can anyone help?

Had he been born in a barracks would his birth have been registered somewhere else other than Irish State Registers - he is not in them.?

And I have not been able to get information on Inniskilling Dragoons that enlightens me as to Joseph Angliss service record with them
