William McNamara arrived Aust 1852 onboard The Progress

Hi everyone,

I have found my GR-GR Grandfathers arrival in Australia, but have no idea on where to look before that. Oral family history is the family arrived from County Clare for William to work for the Victorian Railways on the Swan St Railway Bridge.

Any help to point me in the right direction would be appreciated.

My grandfather, Anthony Joseph Patrick McNamara born 1917 was the son of William Milward and Ellen Anastasia Burns.

Civil registration started in Ireland in 1864 and to search for earlier church records (if they still exist) you need to establish the family's religion and a detailed location for them - i.e. parish, town or townland.

Unfortunately no County Clare parish records are available online at the moment. See the Clare Library, Genealogy website for information on further records.

Hi,

Nothing specific I'm afraid.  My McNamara's came from County Clare too - but it's a very common name in the area, so it's unlikely we're connected.

I was fortunate in that we had some oral history passed down from my grandmother, and knew that our McNamara was married to a Butler (another common name in the area) and that they both came from Crusheen.  We've managed to trace both lines back another couple of generations in the area thanks to a combination of our own efforts, the use of a researcher, and some good fortune.

Clare library has been very useful. It might be worthwile you looking at the 1901/1911 census there to see if you can see them in the area.
