There are Chicago city directories, including 1885 & 1892, available here:  http://www.chicagoancestors.org/#tab-tools

These ones are ancestor siblings, Ben
I'm spending more time on my Wimbush's than my direct lines at the moment - leaving all those brickwalls to rest for a couple weeks, see if they magically fall down when I next have a poke at them ;D

Erato, there's defintely some chance. Will try to seek out the voter regsistrations and have a look through - thanks for the idea.

Will have a look at the link, Shelly, thanks.

Footnote.com has a number of directories for St. Louis.  It's a subscription site, but you can see a portion of the entry without subscribing if you use their "Quick Look" feature.  It appears that there's a Frank A. Wimbush in the 1893 & 1896 directories, an A. Frank Wimbush in 1898 directory, and Ambrose F. Wimbush in 1899, 1902, & 1906.  There are also other possible entries for John & Thomas Wimbush, and other later years for Ambrose.  http://www.footnote.com/documents/100521904/city_directories_st_louis/

You also might want to check the following databases for Missouri/St. Louis, which seem to have possible matches to this family -

Only small fragments of the 1890 US census survive. The returns for about 6000 people out of a population of about 75 million at the time survive.

Thank you for all your help.
I've found them on the links shelly gave, so they were in St Louis rather than Chicago in the mid 1890s.

City directories are a good substitute to the census.
