old maps
« on: Wednesday 19 May 10 18:08 BST (UK) »
I know some ancestors of mine lived in Southend near Henley on Thames in Bucks/Oxon. I would like to find out which cottages were there in the 1860's.  I have been to look at the village, but  can't tell from the building styles which are the right age. Of course they may all be much newer!

Can anyone suggest how I might go about finding out this information?  The old map I have is too small a scale to show individual properties.

Thanks.

Cathy

Your local record office ought to have the tithe maps, which will show all or most cottages ... thats assuming you live near there, of course !   Your profile doesn't say, so you might be in the USA !!    ;D

Might be worth checking ebay too, there are people on there selling copies of old Ordanance Survey maps quite cheaply. I got one of Kensal Green from 1865 and it has the individual buildings marked on it.

Thanks all. Think I'm going to go back to the village and knock on doors and ask. The owners might know roughly how old the house is.

These days people hold their own title deeds which ought to tell you who has ever lived there (for as long as it was not a rented property)
E Yorks - Carver, Steels, Cross, Maltby, Whiting, Moor, Laybourn
W Yorks - Wilkinson, Kershaw, Rawnsley, Shaw
Norfolk - Carver, Dowson
Cheshire - Berry, Cooper
Lincs - Berry
London/Ireland/Scotland/Lincs - Sullivan
Northumberland/Durham - Nicholson, Cuthbert, Turner, Robertson
Berks - May
Beds - Brownell
