No.1 South Parade, Clifton
« on: Wednesday 19 May 10 06:47 BST (UK) »
Hi

I wonder if anyone can help.
I'm trying to find information on a School or similar institution

My Great Grandfather, Ambrose George Redhouse was born and bred in the Cambridge area, but is for some reason shown to be a 12 year old  'pupil' at 1 South Parade, Clifton, Gloucester in the 1881  census. All, of his family were still living in the family home just outside Cambridge at the time.

First assumptions would be that he was at a boarding school, but the family had little money (although not destitute) so I would doubt that this was the case.

In later life, it seems that Ambrose turned out to be a bit of a rascal and may have been no stranger to the law and indeed, it appears that he spent some time at her majesty's pleasure.

I was wondering if possibly 'No.1 South Parade' may have been a reform school or similar.

I cannot find a South Parade in Clifton on modern maps although I believe that there may is a row of houses called 'South Parade Mansions' on Oakfield road in the area

Would anyone have some local knowledge on what this property may have been? Hope someone can help

Thanks

Neil

Hi Neil and welcome to RootsChat

You may already know this but if you have access to Ancestry you can check where a road is by looking at the district description

Find the original image for Ambrose Redhouse in the 1881 census.

If you then click on the next image arrow repeatedly, it will put the road into context - after South Parade it goes into Oakfield Road, nos 43, 41, 39, 37 etc.  There are also a couple of other buildings in South Parade housing a number of scholars.

Also

Next to ‘Return to Search Results’ button you will see

Gloucestershire > Clifton > District 18 > 2

Click on District 18

You should get

County        Gloucestershire
Civil Parish  Clifton

But if necessary you can fill these in

Scroll down to District 18, and click on

View description of enumeration district

It will show you the Enumerator’s Description

On google maps, modern South Parade Mansions Clifton includes

47, 49, 53, 55 & 61 Oakfield Road

Unfortunately, none of this answers your original question about what sort of 'school' Ambrose was attending!!

I can't find out about this place.  It appears it was near Oakfield Road Church.,  It isn't mentioned in Industrial, Reformatory or other schools.

Try asking someone on the Clifton site, they have a bit about history on there.

On the census the Head is a Benjamin Tomkins, Schoolmaster.  There is a bankruptcy for a Benjamin Tomkins Schoolmaster in 1899. (Chantry Road, Bristol)  I don't know if this is the same man who is the head at No 1 South Parade as there is a Benjamin Tomkins who is a principal of Grosvenor College, Whiteladies Road, Bristol. (1875ish)

In 1882 No 1 South Parade Clifton is advertising for a domestic servant but no more information.

No 5 South Parade is a grammar school with several masters asking for pupils circa 1878.
