Ure/Shaw/Gray
« on: Tuesday 18 May 10 10:12 BST (UK) »
Hi, My GGGFather, Robert URE married Elizabeth SHAW 1862.  I believe Elizabeth SHAW was born in Muirkirk.  Robert died & Elizabeth married John GRAY 1867. She brought 2 children to the 2nd marriage. She had 4 more children with John GRAY. If you connect to our Elizabeth SHAW I would like to hear back from you.

Welcome to rootschat Uregirl.  :)

I think you have posted your question in the wrong place - ie at the end of someone elses unrelated question.

I will ask a moderator if they can move this to a more suitable board.

Is there anything specific you'd like to find out about these people or are you trying to contact living descendants? Do you have them in the appropriate censuses for example?

Good luck.

Welcome to Rootschat, Uregirl. I've split your post for now but if you let us know where Muirkirk is in Scotland I can move it to the correct board for you (is it the one in Ayrshire?).

Yes sorry for that.  :-\I am fairly new to this site.  I spotted the member's surname interest SHAW - Muirkirk and wanted to contact her but couldn't find any posts with Shaw as her subject.  I tried a PM but either myself or the recipient didn't have the max.PM to allow that.  I was hoping that she might connect to my family through the detail I supplied.  Any hints or help in posting rules would be helpful as I have already had great success with this site, and will definitely be using it again. Sorry quite longwinded but in answer to your question I believe that it is Muirkirk in Ayrshire.  Are there more that one Muirkirk in Scotland.

Thank you so much for the information.  I have names but no dates or places for the following:
Children of Robert URE & Elisabeth, nee SHAW are Robert and Elisabeth. Naming pattern is quite frustrating.
Children of John GRAY & Elisabeth, formerly URE, nee SHAW are possibly William, James, Annabella, & Thomas.  Apparently John brought his son John (Older than Robert URE's children) to the marriage.
Elisabeth and John GRAY stayed in the Shotts area.  The only family member who came down under was Elisabeth's Grandson John Ure GRAY (Jock - my Grandfather).  I believe he originally went to Australia in 1925 and stopped off in New Zealand on his way home to visit with his Uncles, Michael & Steve HUGHES.  He married and lived out his life here in NZ.
I appreciate the time you all take to find out things that are very difficult to discover or confirm from the other side of the world. Thank you again for your kindness.

OK....got Elisabeth jnr
born 21st July 1865 in Milton, Glasgow Lanark
father Robert Ure
mother Elisabeth Shaw

can`t find any of the Gray babtisms or births....

so we need to find John and Elisabeth Gray in the 1881 census ( in the Shotts area ? )
also I can`t find the death of Robert Ure 1864-1867...we know he was alive 9 months before Elisabeth b July 1865.....allan

8th March 1867  at Calderhead , Lanark ,Scotland John Gray to Elisabeth Shaw    also an extracted record.

I.G.I. also lists children for John Gray and Elisabeth Shaw (location seems to fit marriage place):
1. Jessie Gray born 19 Nov.1867 Calderhead, Lanark, Scotland
2. William Shaw Gray born 23 Feb.1869 Calderhead, Lanark, Scotland
3. James Gray born 26 Dec.1872 Calderhead, Lanark, Scotland
