Margaret Bewes B. 1828 Lancaster
« on: Monday 17 May 10 14:45 BST (UK) »
I have a family mystery which I hope someone might help me with. Margaret was the first born of John Bewes and Hannah Coulson. She gave birth to an illegitimate daughter in 1845 in Lancaster, (who was brought up by John and Hannah).in 1851 she was living in Birkenhead, with a Margaret Gill, but in 1861 she was living in Lincolnshire with the family of Richard Cumberland RN, employed as a Lady's maid.

Here comes the mystery, the Lady died in 1863 in Yorkshire, and from then on I can find no trace of Margaret, BUT I have a photograph of her taken circa 1865, in Pernambuco Brazil. Why was she there, and what happened to her after that ?

Can anyone shed any light on this please i.e. suggestions where I might search for her. I have 'googled' Richard Cumberland plus Brazil, ( I found him on 1871 census, but no Margaret), searched for a marriage etc. to no avail.

Thanks Jackie

Hi Allan

Margaret's sister Mary married an Atkinson in Lancaster. My Mother used to refer to her cousin 'Tony' (Atkinson), who emigrated to the USA, and I believe lived in San Francisco

Could the person you refer to be, a relative of 'Tony' ?

Jackie

Hi Allan

Thank you so much for that. I am unsure where to look on 'family search'. Would you kindly forward step by step, idiot proof instructions, as to how I find the information.

Thanks again for the info.

Jackie

Hi,
I am related to BEWES family of Lancaster and are probably the one you are referring to as living in California.  If anyone wishes to contact me, I can probably help with some details.

My father is probably the "Tony" Atkinson someone mentioned.  My Email is:

janeconcha@cox.net

I have information on the BEWES family who originate in Cumbria and moved to Lancaster area (and Birmingham as well) in the early 1820's.  A branch of the family also went to Australia and I have info on them.

Henry Bewes was the photographer living in Wigton and I have a photo he took of my ancestor Mary BEWES and his father John BEWES.  John was born in 1790 and died in 1867.

Contact me for more info.

Cheers,
Jane
