Bury and Hill, Bewdley/Ticknell

I'm a hobby bookbinder who loves antiquarian books. At the moment, I'm in the process of rebinding what was a rather battered 1824 cookery book. It's clear that the original owner, Susan Hill, used it a lot. There are old ink notations and every now and again a couple of pages are dirtier than the others, suggesting they contained her favourite recipes. This has made me curious to see if I can find out any more about her.

The book was given to Susan Hill on 1st January 1829 by Mrs Bury of Ticknell.

A "receipt" for eye water has been handwritten on one of the pastedowns by Ann Hill (I'm guessing Susan's daughter.)

There are several scraps of paper in the book which appear to be lists of meat bought in 1849 and 1851 by John Bury Esquire, suggesting the 2 families might have been connected in some way. (My "wild guess"  theory at the moment is that Susan Hill might have been the Bury's housekeeper.)

Another tantalising scrap of paper, which was clearly originally twice the size says:

...Hill,
...knell House,
Bewdley

I'm deducing that this is probably Susan Hill, Ticknell House, Bewdley.

Google maps hasn't produced anything, other than Bewdley being in Worcs. So my question is, has anyone heard of a Ticknell House in Bewdley and, if they have, is anything known about it?

According to this Ticknell House go's a long way back, at the bottom of page.

It seems to have a been a bit of a family affair at Ticknell House, with a Sarah Hill there as well as Susannah by 1851. Perhaps Ann Hill was a niece/great niece who inherited the book?



The book by the way, is to be a thank you present for a friend who's just done me a big favour and I'm quite sure, that like me, she'll love knowing a little about the original owner. I've managed to save the inscription, even though it was on the pastedown, so it'll still be a part of the book even though it's been rebound.

(I actually won the book on Ebay from a seller who lives in Winchester. I'm in Whitley Bay on the north east coast and it's next home will be in London, so it's done a bit of travelling since it was in Bewdley!)

I think I've just found Ann! She was christened on 9th April 1786 at Areley Kings and her parents were William and Susannah, so it looks as though she was the younger sister and that it's definitely the right family.

Just as a matter of interest: I have just purchased an envelope addressed to John Bury Esq. Solicitor, Bewdley, posted in Tipton, Staffordshire (now W. Midlands of course) on 13th May 1840. (I came across your chat page whilst looking for some information on John Bury. I collect postal history items associated with my home town of Tipton.)
The envelope did not have a stamp on it - just the hand-stamps already in use by the Post Office. The penny black stamp had been introduced just one week before this letter was posted. Maybe the Post Office handling the letter did not have the stamps yet, or maybe they just weren't used to using them? Would love to know!!

the name of the building immediately  to the S is also rather telling.

I wonder if jim1212's reference on that Kent page should actually refer to Tickenhill Palace.
